Hi.
My dd, who is in college, asked for a home gel manicure set to use while at school. They are a little pricey and while I don't mind spending the money to buy it, I want to make sure they work and get a good one.
Does anyone have any experience on purchasing a home gel manicure set and what extras do I need when I get it (for instance, are there certain types of polish I need to get too).
I would prefer to purchase this online if that helps.
Thank you very much.

I have the SenasatioNail system and I love it. There is a starter kit that comes with the LED lamp required to dry the gel polish, one polish and the base, top coat. I have discovered through reading other forums that you can pretty much use any gel nail polish with the LED lamp so there is no need to remain brand specific with the polish. The SensatioNail brand polish tends to be expensive when you consider that you are getting a smaller than normal bottle of polish. I usually use Gelish brand polishes which I buy on Amazon or Sally Beauty with a coupon.

Thanks so much!
Do I have to get a "removal" kit too for her nails?
I only get "regular" manis so I don't have a clue.
Thanks so much!

I have the red carpet starter kit. Works fine, I don't have much luck with darker colors. Its available at Target

Thanks.
I'll look at this too.
Do you have to get anything else with the Starter Kit.
How do you remove the polish? Do I need to get that too?
Thanks so much!

Red Carpet is $20 more but it looks like it comes with a little more but not exactly sure what since it doesn't say in the description.

You need straight acetone to remove the polish.

I have the red carpet starter set. It comes with everything that you need. I purchased a portable starter set for my sis-in-law for Christmas online on Black Friday from Ulta for $29.99. I am hoping it works as well as mine. The polish lasts for 2-3 weeks easily. I have also been able to find some colors on clearance at Target occasionally. As far as removing it, I tend to just peel it off once it starts to wear or when I get tired of the color (I know it is probably terrible for my nails but it is easy to do).

i like the sensational kit. the best gel polish to buy is gelish and best prices are on amazon or ebay. pick up the 2 pack of foundation/top it off and it will last a year. I use acetone/cotton balls and tinfoil method to soak it off. Been doing gel nails once a week for a year, i have strong and long nails i love it !

I second the pure acetone, foil, and cotton ball technique for removal. I also bought a removal tool from CVS that is also by sensationail. It looks like a giant metal cuticle stick that is used to push off the softened gel polish if it doesn't come off on its own.

I just bought a kit from Sally beauty supply. My daughter and I had been wanting to try it for awhiBe. The light itself was on sale $40. The starter kit was $45 it includes a base, bonding, topcoat, as well as-cleaner and remover. Polish sold separately and the brand was gelish. My DD and I both did our nails this weekend and love the look and feel of it. Don't know how the REmoval process will be. She comes home again from college in two weeks so we plan to do it together then. By the way, she always does our nails with Disney designs befôre our trips and I get lots of compliments. Don't know if we will be able to do that with the gel polish....

I like the Sensationail starter set since it comes with the LED light. Rite Aid often has coupons for it and I get 20% off with my card. I use all different gel polishes, though.

To take off, I use a nail file to file off the top coat. Then cut some round, cotton makeup circles into quarters and put those on my nails with acetone and wrap in tin foil. I also peel it off sometimes, but I know that's bad!

I have had the Red Carpet Manicure set for about a year now and I love it! Easy to get the colors too since I have a Harmon Beauty Supply right in my town. SO easy to use and last a long time!
