I am in the insurance business, and had Geico for a few years, in the mid to late 90s. The price was good, but their service at the time of a claim was not all I could have asked for. We were hit in a Target parking lot. Most parking lot collisions are not "serious" in damages, but inspite of me explaining I was an adjuster myself and discussing in technical terms the degree of damage they disregarded what I said. The initial estimate on my car was $3500. The first supplement was $4800, and was written and sent to them within 10 days of when their adjuster first looked at the car. We had a 2 door Saturn, it was over 2 years old, and we paid in the neighborhood of $11,000 for it new. I called and called the adjuster to try and discuss declaring the car a total loss, she ignored me and said the shop is pretty sure it can be fixed for this and while it is borderline she figures they can fix it. Our car was in the shop for almost 90 days, and the end bill was over $12,000 because the front core support had been crushed and needed to be replaced - a very extensive repair. I discussed this with the adjuster and they said oh well, it is fixed now. Just be glad we don't make you get a salavage title. Uh, right. You fixed a car that shouldn't have been fixed and I should be happy? They quite frankly didn't care, because they were getting paid back from the other persons insurance.
Then came the injury claims. Both my passenger and I required surgery for injuries sustained. We exhausted the other persons policy limits, and presented all of our bills to Geico under the Underinsured coverage. That was in November. In March the adjuster hadn't gotten to reviewing them yet, even though the bills that were not paid from the other company exhausted my policy limit too. It took me calling the Claims Manager and explained I was well acquainted with the Department of Insurance (due to my own position, license and training) to get them to agree to cut a check. It probably helped that I added I was going to come pick it up in person the following day. We lived in Phoenix and San Diego was a short ride.
Okay - long post, but that was my experience. I'm with Progressive now, and thrilled with how my account is serviced.
