Ok, I know you are out there. Who has strong opinions about the two hotels? We have booked the GCH because of the discount, but there is a still a small part that says "maybe we should go to PPH because it is cheaper". Honest opinions here please. We've never stayed at either hotel, only at the DLH (the last time we were there, I thought it was very run down) So please, Dear Dissers, enlighten me with your experiences.:wizard:

I have stayed at all 3 hotels, and here is what I think. I like all 3 of them for different reasons, but you are right about DLH - it is showing its age a little bit and needs a good tune-up. Up until 2000, I always stayed at DLH.

The PPH is a newer hotel and it looks shinier and fresher on the inside, with pastel colors and a cute beachy/surf theme and Surfer Goofy in the lobby. I have stayed there 4 times (possibly 5 and I blanked out on the other one), and I like it. It is a perfectly fine hotel. The only thing that it lacks is space. It does not have the sprawling property on which to build like DLH has and GCH has. Hence, the cheaper price. The last couple of times I was at DLR, I stayed at PPH. I would have preferred to stay at GCH in December but money did not allow it, so the PPH was perfectly fine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and in fact, it is quite adequate, but it just doesn't have anything else to really look at on the property besides the hotel building itself. Definitely stay there if you want a touch of that Disney feeling at the cheapest price. (In my Trip Report, I talk about the PPH stays in October and December of last year - one of them was bad and the other one was good - so check it out if you have time. The link is in my signature below.) It seems kind of far away in the scheme of things, but taking the 'short cut' through the GCH lobby from the PPH is advised!!

As for the GCH, I have stayed there twice. I think it is a great hotel to stay at around the holiday season because it really lends itself to that Christmasy feeling. It is elegantly rustic in theme. It's got dim lighting, dark wood, huge, spacious lobby, a fireplace, a piano player, a lounge and comfy chairs and sofas where you can sip beverages and people-watch - and during the holiday season, there was also a guitar player, a photo session with Santa, an enormous Christmas tree and my favorite - the Christmas carolers who perform in front of the tree every night. I didn't find the actual rooms in the GCH to be that much better than the rooms in the PPH, frankly. The GCH bath products are H20 Spa, whcih are different than the kind that are in DLH and PPH. The beds are kind of tall and firm. The rooms with the view of fireworks and DTD are great because of the view, but they are a looooooonnnng way from the elevators, down seemingly endless corridors, whereas the standard rooms are closer to the elevators.

The bottom line for me is that I lilke the convenience of the GCH due to its close proximity to things, but I prefer the price of the PPH!!! We got so much more accomplished when we stayed at the GCH because we were better rested and my friend did not complain as much about having to re-enter the park after a rest break as she did when we stayed at PPH. Sometimes, at the end of a long, tiring day, saving a few extra steps can make all the difference, and the GCH was so handy because it was right there. The walk back was not daunting. BUT, that said, convenient location aside, I think that most of the appealing features and perks of the GCH can be enjoyed by anyone, and you don't have to actually be a guest at the GCH to take advantage of those things!:goodvibes

I love the GCH and will always stay there..PP doesn't appeal to me at all, but DLH is pretty nice and I'd stay there if I couldn't do GCH. I don't really like hotels with towers though...

I used to stay at DLH back in the day until they bought the pacific (now pp) and then we stayed there. Then once the GCH opened that has become our new home. To me it isn't even a choice...GCH all the way :)

Hey splash.....from one Longview-ite to another.......go with GC. We just stayed there for 7 nights in January (we usually stay at DLH but pool was down so we moved ressies) and WE LOVED IT. If there is a discount, this is where we will stay. DH and I stayed at PP in December for four nights and it was okay but we definitely noticed more walking and just felt a little disconnected from the Disney magic. GC was awesome from the service, to our room and we even used Pinocchios Workshop while we were there which DS loved. DS who LOVES the DLH now only wants to stay at GC, so he even noticed the shorter walks and little amenities and he said that before Pinocchios. He also enjoyed GC pool as much as the DLH.

Oh, and you have to eat at Napa Rose. Best meal I have ever had!!!

The GCH is a beautiful hotel, but for my money I'll stay at PP - I can get a park view room (the nighttime views of DCA from the upper floors are lovely) for the price of a standard room at the GCH. I have to say that I'm not into the whole pool thing - and the pool area at the GCH is nicer than the one at PP. Though DLH has the best pool area - the Never Land Pool beats either of the other two. Yes, it's a little bit longer walk to the PP - but again, that's not a big deal to me. As a previous poster stated, the ground at the GCH are much nicer and more extensive - but you can walk around the grounds on your way to the parks. Self-parking is a lot closer at the PP than it is at the GCH.

Personally, I don't think the GCH is worth the extra money unless I am planning to spend a lot of time in the hotel and not in the parks.

Another vote for the GCH! :thumbsup2 It is a BEAUTIFUL hotel and worth a splurge, particularly when you're getting a good discount. Save the PPH for sometime when you can't get a discount. GCH is very elegant and adult; although the pool is fun for kids. It does have things like storytelling by the fire at night for kids, but it just feels more adult-friendly to me. The location is FANTASTIC and very convenient for getting to DTD and the parks.

As far as PPH is concerned, it's an OLD hotel that Disney has updated. I think the lobby shows the age. It looks like it was really cool in the 60s-70s, but now it just looks old. The rooms have all been renovated, though, and are very bright and fun. It has a great restaurant with a "surfer" theme. I think kids would like the atmosphere of this hotel better than the GCH.

Thanks for all the insights about the hotels- keep them coming!!! Did the GCH offer any events (fitness walk, architecture tour) that anyone has done?:wizard:

Hmmmm....someone from DIS did the architecture tour...who was it? I can't recall. It may have been Nancy (YellowMickeyPonchos). She is a GCH fan as well.

We did the Scavenger Hunt (can't remember the name) and it was cute and DS enjoyed it. You get a neat treat at the end (don't want to spoil it). They had the architecture tour and we did not do this as we thought DS would be bored (last time we took him on a tour he said "Mommy, that person talks to much):lmao: . They also offered a washcloth/towel folding class by the housekeeping staff and we did not do this as it was same time as MM and we did not want to miss that. They had a Sephora tour thing and BAB. Also had the walk in CA in the a.m. but I was too worried that I would not be able to keep up and would look like an idiot. ;)

I almost forgot that was the other thing I liked about GC, was turn down service every night. You would get the days events on your bed each evening with chocolate coins. Housekeeping would arrange DS's stuffed animals in little scenes as well. The housekeeping staff was awesome.

godalejunior, did you stay concierge or just regular when you got the turn down service? My DS is 14 and might like the tour that tells about the hotel. Do you live in Longview now? Small world huh? Do you have any disney stickers on your car? I have a red license plate frame that has disney characters on it.

This trip we did not stay concierge ( DH and I did last year and it was awesome) however we were on the concierge floor, floor 6. I sent you a PM also.

I've never stayed at the Grand Californian, but I've stayed at Paradise Pier twice and loved it. The rooms are spacious and the decor is very nice. I love the beach/California theme that runs throughout the entire hotel. The Grand Californian is very pretty, but it's much more expensive and I've heard the rooms are smaller.

We've stayed at the PPH twice too, and LOVED it both times. Personally, I don't think the lobby looks old at all. The rooms there are spacious and nice, and we love the beach/surfing theme. We also enjoy the pool and hot tub, and the water slide there is the longest out of the three DLR hotels.....our kids LOVE the slide at the PPH. Also, the upper floor themepark views from the PPH are superior in my opinion.

But who am I kidding?......if a super-great discount came out for the GCH, and we could afford the splurge, we'd stay there in a heartbeat. I mean really, the majestic decor, ambiance, and location CAN'T BE BEAT!!!! We dream of staying there someday!

But in terms of value for your dollar......we'd stay at the PPH.

And in terms of more value for your dollar......we'd stay at the HOJO.;)

We liked the PP but we LOVED the GCH. We ended up spending a lot more time in our room then we had planned, and I am glad it was at the GCH. The pool area is wonderful, the lobby with piano is breathtaking, all the details and touches make it such a special place. Do ask for a room near the elevator or you will be hoofing it a mile to your room! I would actually stay at the DLH before we would stay at the PP again, and now with the plans to slowly gut the rooms at the DLH I am excited to stay there when they are done!

Does anyone have any experience with activities at the hotel? Also, any tidbits I should know about? How does turndown service work? Does everyone get that--do you have to call for it?:wizard:

I thought I would chime in with a few comments, since we stay there once/twice a year or so on DVC points....

1) Turndown - standard service for all guests. If you are celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon - it's even more special if they know. We have had the rose petal turndown for our anniversary. It's very romantic. They do turndown in the late afternoon. If you ask the housekeeper, she will do special things with gifts (we had special presents from Santa and Tinkerbell that we wanted the girls to be surprised with when we stayed there the week before Christmas 2008). I just tipped her extra to set them up when we were gone. When they set turndown, you get chocolates and the schedule of special events for the next day.

2) Special tours. We've done several of these - from the architecture to the Sephora makeover, to the holiday scavenger hunt. What fun!!!! They also have Pilates in the morning in one of the ballrooms. The special Build-a-Bear session is great - no crowds. Activities vary every day - sometimes there is storytelling at the fireplace in the evening.

3) The piano. One of my favorite things about the standard view rooms just off the lobby - you can leave your room door cracked open and hear the piano. Sigh.....

4) DTD views - go out on your balcony and hear the music and the bustling DTD crowds. Very nice. Not all DTD rooms have fireworks views, but some do.

5) Quiet sitting areas and the 5th floor outdoor balcony off the lobby - great places to relax.

6) The ability to ride Grizzly Rapids in any season and come back immediately to change to dry clothes!

Hope these help!

Nancy makes some great points. I agree about the standard views being able to hear the piano but when we stay concierge we're always right off the open lobby area and can still hear it so it doesn't have to be a standard room. Also loved DTD view too. It is GREAT to people watch at night, hear the music and see everything lit up after a long day in the park...nice way to wind down. It is also a great way to get pumped up for the day, you hear that soft music and it just gets you in the disney mood. It is like watching disney wake up. :) The walk to the rooms bother some people but I dont mind it at all.
