Is GC worth the extra $ over DLH? I simply cannot decide. Myself, DH, DS 14, DS 12 & DS 10 will be making our first ever trip to DL in August (never been to WDW, either). We always go somewhere new for our vacations so it's highly unlikely we will ever return as a family -- therefore I guess you could call it a once-in-a-lifetime trip. We are willing to pay the extra $, but please tell me what you think are the benefits of GC over DLH. I like the closer proximity to parks, the room balcony, the gorgeous lobby. Is the pool nicer -- the one at DLH looks quite nice. Anything else? I need someone to help me decide!

Thanks so much:flower3:

I love GCH for it's proximity to the parks and it's style. The hotel is newer and the rooms a bit nicer (but smaller) than DLH. The location can be a great plus particularly if you will be spending more time at DCA, and if you allow the kids to be on their own a bit. But be warned, some of the rooms are far from the elevator, and that can counter the great location sometimes. There are some other advantages to DLH beside the cost:
- Most of the rooms at DLH are bigger; this may make a difference with 3 kids.
- The pool is very festive. Pre-teens and younger kids might prefer it over GCH's pool
- A little bit more Disney all around at DLH.
- More shops and restaurants at DLH
- The grounds are very nice, with koi ponds, waterfalls, and such

Still, I love the GCH and would chose it for me if cost were no object.

Is the GCH a bit more calm overall, or does it just seem like it would be because of the architecture? I guess I have the impression that DLH is a bit crazy (like you've never left the park) and GCH is like a calm oasis among the frenzy. Would you say this is correct, or do they have a more similar vibe?

Thank you!:flower3:

It depends on a few factors. The DLH provides more disney theming, both in the rooms and pool. You'll find Goofy in the lobby often, for example. GHC is more luxurious. Has more of a real "resort" feel to it. It's absolutely beautiful. It's also very close to the parks, with it's own enterance in to DCA. It's about a 10 minute walk (for us) to the DLH from DL. But you also have the monorail that you can take back to DTD and is close to the DLH.

For us if money is NOT a factor we would always choose GCH. But we love the theming of the DLH and the Peter Pan pool. So if we want a disney magic trip with that theming we go with DLH. Just depends on the financial issue and what you want in your trip!

As far as the crazyness of the DLH goes, we have not experienced this at all and we have stayed a few times. The atmosphere is totally disney and the rooms are decorated with disney touches from pixie dust wallpaper border to mickey hands light fixtures in the rooms. I love the large rooms of the DLH and we don't feel cramped at all if the 4 of us are all in there together.

I think that's pretty accurate most of the time. The grand lobby at GCH with the lovely fireplace, and lot of comfy seating can be calming. DLH can be quite hectic, especially in late afternoon when lots of people are checking in. Parts of DLH are more calming though, like around the koi ponds, away from the Marina tower and the Neverland pool area.

Here is my two cents. For me GC is more $$$$ then DLH but i have MS and because of my balance and walking I find it much easier for me. I can come and go with no problems at all to both park and DTD without my legs collapsing on me. Yes the extra dollars kills me and when I went in December I paid over 400 dollars for the room because I knew I would never go back and come September 22nd at 1pm west time I will be there agin. If you don't mind walking( 3 boys I am sure can outwalk you) I would do the DLH although when I check it wasn't that much of a difference. Have a FUNtastic time no matter what you decide, I bet this will not be your last time:)

We just got back from 3 nights at the DLH. Although I have never stayed at the GC, my sister did and we were able to see her room and the rest of the resort.

Our room at the DLH was very big. We had two queen beds and a day bed. We stayed with 3 adults, a 17yr old and a 4 yr old and had plenty of room. We stayed in the Sierra tower, which is the closest tower. The other towers aren't much farther though. I also liked the fact that the monorail was so close to the room. We were able to ride it to and from DL several times.

The GC is more luxurious. The lobby is beautiful. It is closer to both parks, but not as close to the monorail as the DLH. We are staying there in Oct because my SIL really wants to stay there. If we were going by ourselves, we would stay at the DLH again instead. I really liked it and it would not be worth the extra money to me.

I was just wondering if these are regular rooms or a suites??? I stayed at DLH way back in 2000 and don't remember the room being that big. We have been staying at GCH because the rooms seemed bigger to me but sounds like everyone is saying DLH is larger.

For me I pick the DLH. And since I am staying on points (DVC) the money was not an issue for this trip. So we decided that since we hadn't been at the DLH for a couple of years, we would go back there vs. the Grand again. I love the light, bright rooms with the Disney touches, the grounds, the larger rooms and just the overall feeling. However, the last time I stayed there, I hadn't stayed at the GCH yet, so I might feel differently? Also, the hotel is older, and now that I have stayed at the brand new GCH, that might be more obvious to me. So we shall see if I still stand my decision after the fact in a few weeks! As far as the GCH, I loved it. Location was great, it had more of a deluxe feeling hotel to it. The lobby is beautiful, however other than walking through it each day, we didn't spend much time in it. The grounds at the DLH however we do appreciate and enjoy and missed those during our GCH stay. The room was a bit smaller than the ones I have in my five stays at the DLH however, not in a way that made me feel like we were in a cave. And it had a nice balcony with a couple of chairs, so that gave some add'l room. DLH rooms do not have balconies. They do have floor to ceiling sliding doors/windows where you can sort of put a chair to enjoy the fresh air and views but not a true balcony.

I will add is at the DLH, all rooms come with some sort of third bed option. Either a daybed or a rollaway. And actually you can have both, if your room has a daybed you can still request a rollaway (and rollaways are free at the DLH). So in that case, its possible all three of your kids could have their own bed. At the GCH, some rooms have bunkbeds with a trundle, meaning, three kids could also have their own bed. However, they are a bit short, my 12 year old was getting close to having his feet touch or hang off the bottom a year ago. Some rooms at the GCH have a daybed and two queens. However some rooms, have two queens, nothing else. In that case you receive a sleeping bag and mat for the third kid to sleep on. For some families thats not acceptable or desireable, in which case the DLH is the better choice. I will also add that Paradise Pier, the other onsite Disney hotel has daybeds in every room (no rollaways available there). And its always the cheapest of the three hotels. And I like it very much too.

In all, I think the pluses and minuses to each hotel are even in the end. You and only you can know if the pluses for your family fall into one hotel's category or the other. I think in the end you cannot make a wrong choice, they both have so much to offer!

Flattfamily5: The DLH generally has large rooms. There are a few that are a bit smaller, you may have gotten one of those. Or it may be like so many other things in life, the more you hear about something, in this case large rooms, the less likely it is to live up to the hype. I think the reason that the DLH rooms are larger is that the hotel is older. It seems to me that when I stay at any hotel that is newer than say 10 years, the rooms are small, whether its a Disney resort or another chain. At WDW for example their two most recent deluxe level (Animal Kingdom and Wilderness Lodges) resorts have smaller rooms than the original Deluxes built at WDW. So in essence, the large rooms might just not be that large to you if you have stayed in other properites that feature large rooms or suites. I would call the rooms at the DLH spacious but not huge as a rule of thumb.

Thanks for your response!!! That helps out! After reading these reviews, I think I'll have to give it another try.
