GayDays 2011 June 2-10

We are in the air somewhere between Charleston SC and Savannah GA. We should be back on the ground in about 45 minutes - not soon enough to suit me. David's been nagging me a bit; he doesn't understand how much I dislike flying. I will be VERY glad when this bit is over.

Hope you landed safe.:lmao:

Looking forward to your reporting.
We were there the same week 11 years ago today-and had a great time.

We did indeed arrive safe and sound. We got to our resort - Westgate Town Center; this is the first time I'm staying at this particular Westgate property, and it's really gorgeous. We got unpacked and headed out to CVS to pick up sunscreen and lotion and so on. We then headed over to meet Illinoisboy29 at DTD for dinner at Raglan Road. After dinner, we dropped IB29 back at his hotel and ran over to Publix to stock the fridge - mostly breakfasty stuff and lots of water (we brought reusable sports bottles from home to reduce the expense of buying water in the parks).

Tomorrow, we are off to Animal Kingdom. David told me I can wake him up by 830, if he isn't up already on his own.

How far away are you from WDW.

My dh has a convention down the road from Sea World and I stop in at the Publix and the newly opened CVS across the street from Sea World. I just wonder if these stores are the one's everyone stops at or do they go to others. I used to fret about not staying on property and having to drive around. But now that I've done it a few times, it is way easy.

When I was at Westgate Lakes, I used to shop at the Publix on Central Florida Parkway, down the road from SeaWorld. Now I'm at Westgate Vacation Villas and Town Center, which is just off 192/Irlo Bronson, just south of Animal Kingdom; there's a Publix about 2 miles west on 192.

Even the one time I actually stayed on property, I had a rental car; I couldn't tolerate standing around waiting for the buses.

We got out of the resort by about 935; pretty good for us, actually, as David is decidedly NOT a morning person. We got to Animal Kingdom in short order (although my GPS routed us to the cast parking gate, so we had to double back).

While we were waiting for Illinoisboy to join us, I bought a hat - I have a lot less hair on top than I used to, and David was nagging me to avoid getting a sunburn. We headed up into the park, first stopping for FastPasses at Kilimanjaro Safaris (which had the longest wait times). We strolled through Pangani Forest, then stopped for a coffee and a snack. We rode the Safari, then crossed over to Asia to get Expedition Everest FastPasses. We stopped into Yak & Yeti for lunch (lettuce wraps om nom nom), then crossed to Discovery Isle to see It's Tough To Be A Bug. After Bug, we wandered over to Dinosaur, which only had a 20 minute or so wait. We headed back to Everest, which I rode mostly with my eyes closed. None of us wanted to do Kali River Rapids, nor did we have any interest in the stage shows, so we decided to call it a gay day. We're back at the resort; David's going to take a dip in the pool while I take a nap. Dinner at Fulton's Crab House at 550pm, then back to the room to change for Riptide. I'll link to pictures when I get them uploaded; keep an eye here for an edit.

ETA: All of the pictures will eventually show up in the album at http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh48/DrGaellon/Disney June 2011, organized by day; today's pics are at http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh48/DrGaellon/Disney June 2011/June 2-3/

Did you see the baby gorilla?
I was so bumbed because I missed her and the baby elephant.
That is why I always say, you have to do everything twice at AK.

Yep, it is Florida Parkway.

I feel David's pain as I am not a morning person either.

Kali River Rapids and I have an understanding that neither one likes the other....

We did not! She must've been hiding. And the only baby elephant we saw was the animatronic one in the truck at the end of the safari ride.

Sounds like you're off to a good start!

I ate at Fulton's for the first time last summer. I was in DTD and suddenly felt like lunch, so I ducked in on a whim. Nice place!

David left the battery for the camera in its charger back at the hotel, so we have iPhones and a disposable - so pictures will be delayed.

Hi Dr.G,
Great pictures, your room looks beautiful I love the jacuzzi tub.
Sounds like your first day at AK went really well, that park can be iffy with crowds sometimes.
Have a great night. :goodvibes

David was actually up and moving at 730, so we were in the parking lot just before 9am. We met up with Illinoisboy just inside the park and immediately made our way over to Space Mountain for FastPasses. While waiting for our FP time, we hit up the rest of Tomorrowland (we missed Carousel of Progress, and deliberately gave the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor a miss). When we went back to Space Mountain, it was down, so we moved on to Fantasyland. (Did you know most people will walk the park clockwise? Adventureland is always most crowded in the morning, while Tomorrowland can be nearly empty. Tour the park in a counter-clockwise fashion to minimize crowd impact.)

We FPed Winnie the Pooh (why is the FP distro all the way over at Philharmagic?). When we got the Pooh FPs, it popped out "surprise" FPs for Philharmagic for that very minute, so we bypassed the queue and went inside. I'm using the Lines app for the iPhone, so when I saw SM was running again, we went back, then popped into Pooh on the return loop. We did Snow White and Peter Pan, then had lunch at Pinocchio Village Haus; I was very pleased to note that the Chicken Parm was a piece of real chicken breast, and the tomato sauce on the penne was rather fresh, with large slices of garlic, rather than a generic marinara. Disney food is much better than it used to be!

We walked on to Haunted Mansion; the new "scenic route" adds a 5-7 minute stroll through an interactive cemetery, with more joke-headstones, and a variety of cute things to look it. It is optional; you can still do the direct route into the attraction, but the new area is cute. We hit the Hall of Presidents, where I promptly napped out (does ANYONE manage to stay awake in there for the whole 22 minutes in the summertime?). Big Thunder Mountain had almost no wait, so we jumped right on it, then got on line for Splash Mountain - which was apparently down for service. We stood in line for 20-30 minutes and moved precisely nowhere, so we ducked out, got FastPasses (for 630pm!) and moved on. We got blocked by the tail end of the parade at the bridge over to Adventureland, so we watched them pass by, and crossed as soon as they were gone.

We got on Pirates of the Caribbean - the right-hand line was nearly deserted until the final turn down to the loading dock (just like most people will walk clockwise, most people, presented with two queues where neither is obviously slower, will choose the one on the left). When we got out, we headed over to what I thought was the Dole Whips stand - we went to the one behind Aladdin's Carpets, next to the Tiki Room, which was, of course, the wrong stand. We had a nice refreshment, though. At that point, we needed to head out, as David and I had brought wet wipes and clean shirts to go to dinner at Narcoosee's, and needed to hit the car. We bypassed the Jungle Cruise (so that's only 3 major rides we missed). We moved the car to the Grand Floridian and met Glenn and Mark for dinner; Narcoosee's was fabulous.

Since we ultimately had some time to kill (none of us wanted to get wet after dinner, so we forwent Splash Mountain), David begged me to go back to the room to get the battery for the camera - I bought him a nice one with a specialized Fireworks mode, and he wanted pics. My feet were hurting and I wanted a change of footwear, so I indulged him; we got back to MK about 830 and reconnected with Glenn and Mark. They had two FPs for Space Mountain, so Mark and I had a nice sitdown while Glenn and David did the ride again. We strolled the Main Street shops; I bought a few pins and David bought Mickey-shaped pasta for my mother and my sister, then we headed up to the corner by Edy's Ice Cream for the Memories & Me video show (how amazing is that?) and Wishes. (We did get some great photos of the fireworks - http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh48/DrGaellon/Disney%20June%202011/June%204%20Magic%20Kingdom/Wishes/). After the second Memories & Me show (we sat and had a rest on the Tomorrowland Terrace seating area, with a perfect view of the castle), we headed across the bridge to Liberty Square. We got another sweet treat at Sleepy Hollow (Coke floats, mmmm), then had a seat on the wall outside the Christmas shop for the Main Street Electrical Parade. After the parade, we two very tired boys headed back to our place to hit the sack...

Hi, Guys! It was a pleasure to meet you! :goodvibes Looking forward to reading more about your trip!

It was delightful bumping into you. We're at Epcot again tomorrow (we're going to take your advice and see if we can get ADRs at Flying Fish tomorrow instead of Bistro de Paris) and Studios Tuesday; if you're around, maybe we can meet again.
