Gay characters (and couples) in Disney shows and movies

That would be weird to me, a princess/princess story ,prince/prince story.

It wouldn't be weird if that's how you were oriented.

It's not weird to me, and I am a married heterosexual, but I can understand how it may be weird for so many people.

I think we can take the "oriented" word to mean two things: either homosexual, so two princesses or princes is your preference, or, oriented as in tolerant and brought up to accept all people, regardless of whether they are the same as you or not.

How can you not "support" a lifestyle????? It's a rhetorical question. No answer expected, or wanted.

Regardless, being gay is not a "lifestyle" it's a form of being. Period. Just to be perfectly clear; with or without the sex.

There are gay characters in animated Disney as we speak. Some stereotypical, others completely mainstream like the rest of the community.

Interesting thread, Tiger

I'm still trying to figure out what this "gay lifestyle" is and how it's different from the "straight lifestyle." I mean come on. There is no such thing as the "gay lifestyle."

I think it would be great if there were some gay characters in Disney films or shows. LGBT kids need those kinds of role models. Need to see gay characters in the mainstream. Characters that show them who they are is not wrong, when every peer and adult in their life is telling them that they are.

What do you mean, how is it different??? One is a man and woman, other is two men or two women. Or in some cases man, man and woman, or woman, woman and man. That would be called a "bi" lifestyle. Even worse in my eyes. but I suppose i'm way to conservative for everyone here. Seems I'm being discriminated against now.
Is everone ok with explaining the "bi" lifestyle with their 4 year old. Heck, why doesn't Disney have a bi character?

:confused3 How's that?

Send your 4 year old over to my house. My 3 year old knows that many different families types exist. BTW, I am a conservative too. Conservative doesn't mean bigot.

Wow, that really uncalled for, just because someone doesn't share your views doens't give you the right to call names

The point is that whether the family is straight or gay 99 percent of their "lifestyle" is exactly the same. We shop for groceries, do laundry, work, take kids to school...all the same day to day life.

From wikipedia:

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing sex, race, ethnicity, religion or spirituality, nationality, language, inter-regional prejudice, gender and sexual orientation, age, homelessness, various medical disorders particularly behavioral disorders and addictive disorders. Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views.

I stand by my verbage.

I stand by mine as well, uncalled for, I don't think Wikipeda, is a very good source to use as a dictionary LOL

Look at Websters I think you might find a totally different meaning.

I do in fact understand what being gay means. What I don't understand is the term "gay lifestyle" because it implies that a gay person's day to day life is somehow different from a straight person's day to day life. The fact that a person happens to be gay is not a lifestyle. I promise, a gay person gets up and goes to work and the grocery store and takes a shower and cooks dinner exactly the same way you do. Who a person happens to fall in love with and come home to at the end of the day in no way affects their lifestyle. Most gay people you meet, you wouldn't even know were gay. So how is it a lifestyle?

And I certainly don't understand how saying "there are many different kinds of families, and that's ok" is hard to explain to a 4 year old. If a tv show talked about a child who was adopted, would you explain that to them? I bet you would. It's just a different kind of family.

My 4 year old knows that different families exist, as he sees different families and we talk about different families. I don't explain anything to do with sexual relations as he's a baby boy. Why does sex have to figure into it? I don't discuss my sex life with them either. I don't explain anything to do with any sexual relations as he's too young, but that is vastly different than young children being accepting towards others.

:confused3 How's that?

I'm not sure either?

So does my 4 year old.

Funny story. We were walking to the car with our uncles last month after Thanksgiving dinner, and my baby boy said something about them being brothers. Our uncles are gay, and so they started to laugh, and I said to the kids that they are definitely together as husbands and they are married. Now the kids were confused because they never went to a wedding, as it happened before they were born. Our baby boy continued to press them on whether that was true or not, and I said what do you mean? And he said, we never went to the party, so I don't think they are married! :rotfl2: Out of the mouth of babes.

Our 8 year old was a bit confused as to why we never went to the wedding, so we talked about how it was before they were born, and they went to a special place to have the wedding, just the two of them. Both kids were sad because none of us got to see the wedding. It was a very interesting conversation, and one that I'm sure not many parents would even dream of having with their kids.

It would be great to see two dads or two moms as parents on a Disney show or movie. My 8 year old figured out years ago, that Disney has a pattern in movies and TV shows having 1 parent families, so why not same sex parents?

Tiger

Well, because I am not able to express my feelings without abuse.. I am being ganged up on. It is a free country, right?? So why am I not entitled to my opinion???

Ahhhh, abuse.

I think you've expressed your feelings just fine...

Why? Are you in a relationship with a dog you want to legally marry? Why not, everyone can do what they want, right???

:confused3

So if I believe homosexual sex wrong, and is against my moral standards, and you think that is bigoted... by your own definition, you are bigoted against my religion.
 You. Bigots.
And as I recall, the majority of people were not upset that Tiana was black, but that the first black princess was not a princess, she was the "princess" family cook.
I would not be holding my breath for the first gay princes. I don't feel like explaining homosexual relations to my children before I explain sex to them. Call me old fashioned.
