gateway computer help - no sound

W have a gateway desk top with windows XP. It crashed once and my old boss's husband fixed it, but ever since then it no longer has any sound. I have some on the disc that came with the computer, none of the disc say anything about sound. Would you guys have any suggestions? I did have a college kid look at it and they couldn't figure it out. We have speakers that you plug into it, they turn on, still no sound. TIA.

I had that happen once, I had to reinstall the device drivers for the sound card. http://www.ehow.com/how_5016648_install-sound-device-drivers.html Try that, and you don't necessarily need the cd rom that comes with your computer, you should be able to find the correct driver by googling something along the lines of "Gateway (your computer model) XP sound device driver"

Your sound card may be shot. You can pick up a cheap replacement and itstall it. It's not very hard.
