From SWA's site:

Strollers and Child Restraint Systems (CRSs) or Car Seats
Customers traveling with children will be allowed to check one stroller and one Child Restraint System (CRS) or car seat per child without charge. This is in addition to the regular free baggage allowance.
The stroller and CRS or car seat allowance applies to any type of stroller (umbrella, full size, jogging stroller, etc.) and CRS or car seat.
The Customer may check the stroller and CRS or car seat at the curb, ticket counter, or gate.
Southwest Airlines will not assume liability for damage to strollers, CRSs or car seats. Each should be tagged as conditionally accepted and placed in a plastic bag.

We haven't flown yet with our little one. I called a few weeks ago and they said yes you can gate check the stroller.

We just flew home on Sept. 2nd we checked the stroller at the gate with no problems going or coming home.

You can gate check strollers on all US airlines, although some have weight and size limits now. This information is easily found on all airline web sites.

American Airlines has a VERY strict policy that doesn't allow for gate checking of many strollers so I would recommend checking with the airline before booking. We had to make last minute arrangements when I flew in June with our 12 week old baby as our stroller is a jogging stroller and weighs more than 20 lbs.

Yes, that is why I stated that some airlines have weight and size restrictions. American Airlines prohibits gate checking strollers 20 pounds or heavier, which seems like a good rule to me. You can still check enormous strollers, just not at the gate. I can't imagine traveling with a jogging stroller, unless I was going to participate in a race with a child. More sensible to purchase a lightweight travel stroller.

You should always be familiar with your airline's policies before traveling. The people who aren't, always end up here complaining (not directed towards above poster).

Unfortunately, some of us have very large children that overwhelmed the lightweight strollers as a very young age. The larger jogger is the only way the poor kid's shoulders would fit comfortably. :goodvibes
