Anyone have any recent experience being at Disney after having gastric bypass surgery? We're hoping my dad will be joining us for our January trip, and he just had his surgery this past May. We were going to do the Dining Plan, but there's no way he will be able to eat that much food - he can only eat about 2 oz at a time now. Anyone know if we will be able to share meals with him instead of ordering his own? I've shared meals with my sister before, but I've heard that some places give you a hard time about this in the Dining Plan. Also, we're not opposed to buying him the plan as well - I'd imagine we could just go to one more restaurant.

I don't think anyone can say for sure what 2008 will bring for the DDP. Things like sharing seem to be a mix, and again hard to say if current policy will remain or not.
If your father is staying in a room alone, I suggest he book either a package without the DDP for himself or a room only.
But he would have to book by himself as the DDP is for all (or none) in a room/package.

I had the Lap Band procedure and used the dining plan in April 07. I too, can only eat small portions. I had to take the dining plan because we were all in the same room, and it seemed like a good deal for the rest of my family. For sit down meals, I ordered what I wanted and ate what I could. I mostly got smooth things like soups for appetizers and custard type desserts, limiting the more solid items for entrees. With the Lap Band, I am pretty limited in textures of foods, so no steaks or burgers, mostly fish, entree salads, or risotto, something like that. I did not care about leaving food on my plate and enjoyed whatever I wanted.

For counter service meals, I sometimes ordered a full meal and ate some and shared the rest or if someone else in the group was not very hungry and ordered something appropriate for me, I would have a small amount of their meal. Also many places had soup or chili for a snack credit which made a great lunch for me.

I did obsess before the trip about what I would do with all the food off the dining plan but it really was not big deal. Soups and custards are not very filling even with weight loss surgery, they basically go down as liquids, and making smart entree choices worked for me. I did in fact lose over five pounds in the nine days I was there and had some amazing meals in the process.

Enjoy!
Trish
