We will be in WDW next week. DH had gastric banding in May 05 (he's lost 92lbs!!!!) My question is, he eats very little at a time now-will he have any problem ordering a childrens sized meal or appetizer only-will we get a surcharge? Of coarse, we will pay for buffet meals full price, but I hate to pay so much for dinner when he eats such a small amount. :wave2:

I think Disney has an age limit for ordering off the children's menu. But, I once couldn't find anything to eat at Brown Derby, and they let me get a kiddie meal.

Buffets are all you can eat, and I don't think it matters how much or how little you plan to consume.

Ordering only an appetizer shouldn't be a problem. I'm a light eater and have done that myself many times. Sometimes it just helps me have room for a big dessert later. Children's menu, I haven't tried, but I'm not really into the food on children's menus anyway. I've had many great appetizers though!

Congrats on DH's weight loss and enjoy!

I believe I read somewhere that if you bring a document from your doctor telling which surgery you had you could get a discount or maybe even charged childs price. Maybe you could do a search on this board for gastric by-pass. Congrats on the weight loss. I've been seriously considering one of the surgerys myself. Susan

I feel ordering appetizers is the best approach. Gastric bypass doesn't destroy your tastebuds, and some of the most wonderful dishes can be found on the appetizer menu.

I remember reading this also, they would charge him the children's price at the buffet's. I've never had a problem with my older dd16 ordering off the children's menu (very picky), so I don't think that he would!! Just explain the situation.

Please note that it would be illegal for Disney to make this an official policy, as the ADA Title III prohibits private organizations from requiring proof of medical conditions. As you can well-imagine, being prohibited from making it a policy extends to prohibiting training to ensure consistent application by CMs. As such, some CMs may grant such considerations while others will not. Please be prepared for either. (Personally, I feel the law should be changed.)

They will need to sell him children's portions as long as he has a medical statement from his physician.

we traveled with a friend that had gastric bypass surgery. She carried around the doctor's statement with her, and at buffet meals they only charged her a child's price (after checking with the manager to make sure it was okay.)

Anyone can order off of a children's menu at any of the restaurants on property EXCEPT for the San Angel Inn in Mexico. They absolutely will not allow it for anyone over 9 (which was a real pain in the neck when my daugher wanted the kids quesadilla on the children's menu and nothing else.) They would not budge on that at all (and this was NOT with the dining plan, just the restaurant's policy.)

So if you want to order from the child's menu in almost every restaurant it is acceptable, and if you are dining at a buffet just advise your server and they should charge the reduced price for you.

Best of luck with the surgery and weight loss.
