gas station complaints--

To the OP, I can answer your question but not out in the open. If you would like you can PM me.

You've been awfully harsh with your responses in this thread--is the using of gift cards to pay for gas a particularly sensitve subject for you?

I think he's just this way in every post he makes.

Well, that ARCO is the odd one out.
FROM THE ARCO WEBSITE
Why don't ARCO stations accept credit cards?
We do not accept credit cards because in doing so, we would incur additional fees from the credit card companies on each gallon of fuel you buy. As most of our customers pay with cash, we do not accept credit cards as part of our strategy to sell good gas at a good price.

Well I'll be sure to let DBF know he's lucky that he gets to use the cc at our ARCO. :) And that makes no sense, they accept debit cards and pass those fees on to the consumer, why would they not pass the fee onto the cc holder as well? Seems like a silly business decision to me...... Like I said, I stopped going, the lines are always huge there and the gas isn't cheaper then the place I do go so when it became more of a hassle (debit card fee, having to go inside to pay with a cc, I have kids with me when I get gas and I don't want to leave them outside alone nor do I want to trek them in and out, huge lines = long waits, rude people trying to "beat" you to a pump when you're clearly next in line etc etc) I just stopped going there and started going to another station. The station I do go to is a little farther away from our house (which is why DBF still stops at ARCO sometimes) but the price is right and I can pay at the pump so I just go there. :)

Gift Cards are NOT cash. I have never worked somewhere where they were ever treated on our end as cash. It does not matter how someone paid for the gift card. Once it is on a gift card that is what it is... a gift card. If you pay with a gift card and then return the item, you get a gift card back. Why? Because that is the tender it is... not cash.

A gift card is not run as a cash transaction. It simply can not be done (in all my experiences). So I see no problem with the first situation. If the OP wanted the cash price, then they should have used cash.

The second situation should be escalated to a manager. The OP didn't get the price promised and were over charged. They should be due a refund in that case.

We had our first encounter with paying credit/debit card fees at the pump during our recent Disneyland trip. We had a rental car and stopped to put gas in it. There was a sign posted that a .45 fee would be added to the total. It was .45 no matter how much gas I bought, so it was a flat fee. I figured it was just that gas station adding the fee.

A few days later when we were on our way to the airport to return the car, we stopped to top off the tank so it would be full. Again, we had to pay a .45 fee for using a credit card.

Here at home there are no fees for using debit/credit cards at the pump. I hope it doesn't happen, but it probably will happen eventually. It may end up happening with all debit card purchases eventually. That would really add up for me. I rarely carry much cash around.

"This Card cannot be redeemed for cash"
Bingo.

Not at all, on either account. I suspect those who claim that they feel that gift cards should work like cash are just denying facts that they already know, or should know, so my comments don't need to be voluminous. If anything, what I'm sensitive to is folks expecting something other than what they were explicitly promised. That's always a sensitive subject.

May I ask why you are coming to the conclusion that I don’t know how to read, rather than that your position was incorrect?
See above, and below.

Well said.
