Gas Question

Pull up, open window, turn off ignition.

"Hi, fill it, regular, cash"

"Twenty dollars."

Pay.

"Thanks, have a nice day."

Used to. Now they'll check the oil upon request. Window washing stuff is available but no one routinely does it anymore.

Though I was in a gas station yesterday and the attendant did the windows without asking. Haven't seen that in a very long time.

I have been pumping my own gas for so long I had nearly forgotten that when I was first driving most of the gas stations were full service. The small town I lived in you could sit and wait quite awhile before the guy would quit yakking it up with his buddy at the counter and come out to pump gas. And if you didn't pay with the exact amount - or if you used a credit card then he would go back inside where he could very likely get caught up in a conversation again! Our gas station was the local hang out for teenagers and young guys. They would all stand around and wait while someones car was getting worked on - or just sit around and gab because there was nothing else to do.

I also remember when they started switching to self serve and I had a devil of a time trying to pump gas because the pump wouldn't fit in my tank. It took me awhile to figure out the leaded and unleaded difference :confused3 Of course my dad gave me crap about it - but hey - they had always pumped it for me before - I didn't know. :rolleyes1

And it's funny, I'm usually racing to get the ignition turned off, window down, and gas door open so I don't hold the guy up!

:goodvibes I would love to have attendants here. It's hard to even find a full service station around here anymore!

ITA. Pump my gas, please! ANd it really doesn't hurt that NJ's gas is cheaper. It was great when I lived in Phila and worked in NJ... I got all my gas there!

Almost 50 years old here and never heard of anyones fuel line broken either!!
Friends , family, co-workers, friends of co-workers etc.

and that is not something that people would be quiet about if it happened to them!

And the attendants are not slow.. and usually there is no car in front of me... no wait...

The best part is not having to get out in cold weather or rain!!

Ditto!

Hey, I'd use full service if it wasn't 25 cents a gallon more.
Even my 87 year old mother fills her own gas tank, as a child of the depression, there is no way she's paying 25 cents more for ANYTHING, and she even inquired if they offered a Senior Discount.:lmao:

Because the only time I've ever heard of a gas station attendant damaging a car is here, on a thread like this one, from someone who doesn't live here. How is it, living here my entire life, that I've never had any damage, or known anyone to have any damage, and yet there are others who have limited time in NJ, who have suffered damage many times? :confused3

Or I've had cars with tempermental sensors. The 2 new cars I had while I lived in NJ had this problem, and they would be often have a damaged line due to an attendant inserting the pump in a little too harshly, or taking it out. Wasn't just one time with each car, but serveral times, which I believe was mostly due to an attendant in a hurry.

But hey... some people get their homes broken into, but I haven't had it ever happen to me. I guess it doesn't happen? :dance3:

Do you tip?

I vaguely remember full service being an option at a few stations around here when I was a very young child, my parents never used it since they charged a bit more per gallon. Now you NEVER see full service out here in the 'burbs (not sure about the city).

I think I'd like it in the winter, even if I had to wait a few minutes it'd be worth it! :cold:

Yes. This comes up all the time. I will let you know exactly how this thread will go:

It is stupid you have to pay someone else to pump you gas

Our gas is lower then surround states

Maybe, but yours would be even cheaper if stations didn't have to pay someone to pump your gas.

It is nice to be able to just sit in your car in bad weather and let someone else do it for you.

Maybe, but it should be a choice, not a law.

Why do you care anyway, you don't live here.

It is just the principle of the state dictating to a business that they must employee a non-essential employee.

This will go back and forth for pages and pages. I have just saved you valuable minutes of your life since you can stop reading now.

:lmao:

Nope, no tip.

They're a dying breed here (NY), but I have been able to ferret them out - LOL.. I can't stand pumping my own gas, so I go to the few places left that will do it for me..:thumbsup2

Hysterical about NJ and the hair spray..:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
