Gas or electric?

In a perfect world I would have a gas stove and an electric oven.

Another gas convert. I always had electric cooktop - then all the houses here seem to have gas. I love it!

We do have an electric oven (so I'm in a perfect world... :D ) double perfect as we have a double electric oven........now there is something to consider for you new home.

I would have never thought I'd use two ovens, but it's fantastic!
Main meal in one, desert cooking in the other. Thanksgiving was no problem! You can set each to a different temp, and I use both all the time.

I grew up with gas, DW with electric. When we got married, we went electric. We had a minor disaster, and had the chance to convert to gas. It's been gas ever since and there have been no complaints or problems. We vote gas.

We have electric rings right now but given the choice the next one will most definitely be a gas hob with electric oven. As the others say you can control the heat better. Good luck on your choice!

It is In the event of a power failure you can still carefully light the burner with a match or long-lighter. The electronics assist in quicker lighting of the burners with no need for pilot lights (right?)

I've used both and prefer gas.

Actually, the "best" combination is a gas cooktop with electric ovens. Gas performs better and has more precise control than electric for stovetop use because electric elements take a while to cool off... with gas you can immediately control the amount of heat you are throwing at something. Electric ovens maintain much more even heating than gas ovens do. If you don't want to go for separate cooktop and wall ovens, they also make "duel fuel" ranges which have a gas cooktop and electric oven all in a standard 30" range. You can have the best of both worlds!

No matter WHAT you do, it will be CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP to wire and plumb for BOTH gas and electric. This way if you find you hate one or the other it will be a matter of switching out the appliance and not rewiring/replumbing your kitchen.

GAS GAS GAS!

Grew up with gas, have a rent house with gas heat but electric stove... HATE cooking on an electric range.

Can't wait to buy a gas stove =)

Why not go with both...Gas cooktop and Electric oven. We have a gas cooktop and a set of electric double wall oven (regular and convection). It gives you flexibility in the event of a power failure and it's the best of both worlds for cooking...the fast heat up times for gas - boiling water for pasta etc, and the evenness in baking from an electric. At least that's why my DW loves our setup.

I grew up with electric (mom had a flat top stove, as did I in my first house.)

we had to live in an apartment for 6 months while our new house was being built...we had a gas stove there. we ate out alot. I burnt many many a meal.

I would get what you are comfortable with...I flat out HATE cooking with gas...i'm used to electric and burn much less food with it! ;)

Thanks for all of the information. I didn't think about the cleanup problem with gas. How much of a pain is it to clean the gas range?
