Ok DD went and picked up her prom dress. While we are there they have many prom garters on sale...different colors etc. They were very pretty lace, with PROM 2008 on them. I asked the lady who was helping us about them :confused3 I mean I have seen garters at a wedding but Prom. She said that the girls were buying them to give to their boyfriends. The boys wear them on their arms like armbands. She said the boys put them in their cars etc.....Has anyone ever heard of this?? I thought it sort of sounded like a weird status symbol. I have never ever heard of this.....

I graduated from high school in '88 and we had garters. In fact, garters were one of the favors that we received at the prom. I think I still have mine somewhere.

Seems kind of trashy to have a garter at a Prom.:confused3

I never did it with my date because frankly I don't understand the point of it, but some of my friends did it with theirs.

However, and you may not want to hear this, the boys took them off the girls themselves.:rolleyes1

I graduated in (gulp) 1982 and I never heard of this. They were really pretty.

I'm pretty sure both nieces got garters for their prom favors. I don't know if they wore them, or just gave them to BF.

Not all of them, my DD had one and gave it to her date, but since they are only friends, she handed it to him!

I wanted to ask "Ummm who gets it off". I can picture girls in the bathrooms taking off garters. I can also picture boys helping them:scared1: . We didnt get one.....DD is looking for the intials L and B on jewel picks for her hair. She is wearing it all up and has seen these on brides. She can give him the "B" for a token when the prom is done....lol.

I wasn't saying they all do.

I'm saying that some of my friends did.

And a lot of the "social" girls did too.

I don't know how I'd feel about my own daughter having one though. To me, I guess it just seems to send a weird message.:confused3

We didn't have it taken off our legs or anything (not that I would have let either of my prom dates do that, ewwwwwwww). It was just a favor.

I've never heard of garters for prom. My sons never gave them to their dates and heaven help the guy who would try to give one to my daughter. My sons would beat the bejesus out of him.

Our prom favors were glasses with the date and theme on them.

I have two teen daughters and I've never heard of prom garters.:confused3

When I went to prom (1983), we did this ... it was a big thing, the removing of the garter. I went to prom w/my friends (not as individual dates), so we put ours on our calves ... which meant that they automatically fell to our ankles. haha! Since we had an equal number of guys and girls, the guys just took them off our ankle! haha!!! It was never risque b/c it was just pull it off at the ankle and not hike the skirting up or have the guy groping thighs.

But, yes ... guys would hang the garter from their rearview mirror. Girls would dry their corsage and pin it up somewhere in their room. My corsage was pinned on my cork message board until I threw it away at the end of summer.

To this day, I do not get the garter tradition. I am actually surprised that it's still around. I haven't seen a garter from a rearview mirror in I don't know how long!!!! I also think people stopped hanging their graduation tassel from the rearview mirror as well ... haven't seen that much, either.

Oh my!!! I am laughing so hard at "Prom Thong" but I know DH would not be at all!!!!:rotfl: We were looking up prom flowers to try to get an idea for boutonnieres (Spelling??) they have the strangest flowers. Look here

leg flower tattoos???? I am OLD!!!!!!!I had a little nosegay and thought it was the most beautiful , romantic thing!!

The prom garter has been around for a very long time... I think everyone reads too deep into things. Just because it's a garter does not make the girl a "social girl". Next thing we know we will want all of our kids to be like the ones in Footloose before that evil Kevin Bacon arrived into town.

I had prom in 2006 and 2007 and never heard of this either year.
