Question- Do you check your garment bags or carry them on the plane? We need to take a suit and formal dress with us and we don't know how to transport it. Help.

We bring ours on BUT you can't always count on hanging them up. Sometimes there is a closet, sometimes not; I guess it depends on the plane. I've also been told that the closet might be full. In that case, you will have to put it in the overhead compartment.

Unless you are flying first class, I would not count on a closet. They are even removing closets from first class on some airlines (USAirways has on some models).

I have seen people carrying on garmet bags, you will probably have to fold it in half to put in the overhead.

Glad you asked this question. We are flying AA (MD-80) to Chicago for my daughters national dance competition and do not want to risk sending the garment bag through with luggage. The costumes are too fragile and we would hate to have them lost. We will have my wife take the garment bag on as her carry on and I will will bring a carry one for both of us.
