Garfield Movie....Cruelty???

I want to take my 5 year old niece to see the Garfield movie, but when I told my mom of my plans, she said "NO WAY...that movie promotes cruelty to animals!!"

Has anyone seen this yet? Is it true...do they show animal cruelty????

I know that the premise of the cartoon is that Garfield basically "tortures" Odie in a funny way, but I don't want to take my niece to see the movie if the poor dog really takes a beating from Garfield.

My niece would probably understand that the movie is just 'pretend', but she's also a sensitive kid & I don't want her to be upset.

Any tips or advice would be great. Thanks!

Dogs generally DO take a beating from cats - it's those danged claws!!!!!!

I haven't seen it but my daughter thought it was funny. It's humor and it's a cartoon!!!

Aside from it being a pretty horrid movie from what I've heard...

I doubt anyone in this day and age would actually *promote* cruelty to animals and unless your DD has a great deal of trouble seperating reality from a make belive movie, you should be okay.

I doubt very much that any kids came out of this movie thinking "wow, I really feel like drop kicking a poodle.... "

I think your mom is overreacting, no offense.

I didn't see it, but my 16 year old DD and my sister went. They thought it was really funny. If you think the comic strip is cruel, then you probably won't like the movie.

I've seen it and Garfield acts like Garfield. He does push Odie out of the chair a lot but cruelty?

As for the movie, it's not great but kids seem to love it and I've seen worse. Spykids 3-d is still the worst kid's movie I've seen.

I've seen it too, and it's actually pretty much like the cartoon. Garfield boots Odie off his chair, and that's about it. To even cal it "cartoon violence" is a stretch, IMHO. It's certainly not Itchy and Scratchy.

And it wasn't terrible, either. The grandkids seemed to like it, and I didn't hate it. My standard for a really bad kids' movie is "Pokemon, The First Movie (Mewtwo Strikes Back)" which I think actually subtracted points from a viewer's IQ. Garfield is Citizen Kane compared to that one.

I took my DD 5 to see it and I didn't find it cruel! Yes Garfield pushes Odie out of the chair and makes silly remarks about him but it's not like there were any cat or dog fights with claws drawn or anything.

Take your DN she will have a good time!!!!

LOL! I haven't had the "pleasure" of seeing Cat in the Hat yet thank goodness. DH took DS to see it but DH liked it which says something about his taste in movies.

Another bad one was Scooby Doo 1. What a dopey movie.

No...no real animal cruelty in it. I took my kids DD5 & DS9 to see it and they thought it was funny. I had the entire plot figured out in the first few minutes. The guy who plays Jon is a pathetic actor...and the female lead - Jennefir Love Hewitt, is that her? I think it was just a movie to show how short she could wear her skirts.

Not the best movie and it won't be up for any awards, but it was nice to have one to take the kids to.

What your mom could have been reacting to was not the Garfield/Odie stuff, but that there was a character putting shock collars on animals to train them. That guy was pretty cruel. But my kids handled it without a second thought.

Cheyita, I bet that's it! My mom is very into PETA, so that portion of the movie probably made it's way into PETA's newsletter.

Oh MY, planogirl! I totally agree about SpyKids 3-D. I actually like the first two, especially the first, but the last one was brain-draining. My boys loved it, but I think they liked the idea of a 3-D movie. They could have shown grass growing in 3-D and the boys would have liked it.

(Sorry, OP. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I so agree with Planogirl. I also agree with Cat in the Hat, Pokemon, and Scooby Doo 1. I wonder if they could have put just a little MORE cleavage in that movie!)

I'm sorry, but IMO nothing beats Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Seeing Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda in that one was just painful. Really really painful. Painful enough to evoke nightmares! (For the parents that is.... the kids loved it)

The direction of this thread seems to be straying from the OP, but I wholeheartedly agree, Spy Kids 3 is the WORST kids movie ever!!!!!!!!! Simply awful! I loved the first 2, but this one was just plain bad.
