What is your favorite/most used garden tool? :)

Mine is definitely my Felco garden shears/pruners #8. I keep them in my pocket when working in the yard and am constantly reaching for them for a myriad of tasks.

Here are some tips to help keep your tools in tip top condition. :)

Caring for your gardening tools

When you are purchasing new gardening tools, you will more than likely have a choice of low price/low quality or higher priced/high quality tools. Quality tools are designed to last many years, but they must be cared for and maintained. If you opt for bargain priced tools, maintaining them is less of a problem. When they wear out, you simply throw them away.
Maintaining your garden tools on a regular basis assures that they will be ready to go to work on your next garden chore. Following a few basic rules will add many years of life and use to all of the tools which make your gardening tasks easier.

* Always remove all of the soil from your digging tools after each use.
Usually hosing is all it takes, but use a screwdriver to remove dried mud.
* Never put your tools away wet. Allow them to dry completely before storing to prevent rusting and handle rot.
Once each garden season, rub linseed oil into your wooden handles to help preserve them.
* After each use, wipe the metal parts of pruners, shears, and loppers with an oily rag.
Alternately, you can wipe your tools dry with a clean rag, and then spray lightly with a penetrating oil such as WD40 ®
* Sharpen your cutting tools as well as the blades of shovels and spades during the gardening season. A hone or whetstone should be used for sharpening cutting tools. A file should be used to remove nicks and smooth the edge of your shovels and trowels.
* Thoroughly clean any tools which have been used for chemical applications. Fertilizers and other chemicals will rapidly corrode any metal parts.
* For extra rust prevention, fill a 5 gallon bucket with builders sand and pour a quart of new motor oil over it. Use this as a shovel cleaner/oiler each time you put your tools away. Push each tool into the oily sand several times. You can also use this bucket as a shovel stand.

Ouch! I don't do any of those things!

I also like my Felco pruner/shears. The only thing I don't like about it is that the catch to hold them closed keeps engagine at most inopportune moments. I suspect I need to tighten the nut ....... I'll get there.

I also like my three prong, hand-held thing that looks like a distorted rake. How's that for a description. It loosens my clay....uh, I mean soil as I weed.

AND IT'S FINALLY RAINING HERE!!!!! FINALLY!!!!

Most used, not my favorite: Watering Can. Especially this year when we had very limited use of the hose.

There a 3 things that I use all the time when gardening. I couldn't garden without them. My wheelbarrow, my spade or grass edger and my hand held 3-pronged aerator. I constantly edge and aerate the soil. Edging keeps the gardens neat and aerating keeps the soil loose and removes the weeds.

I got one of those things too. I picked it up this Spring!! I had never seen such a thing before and it was great!!! But...it has since disappeared into the deep dark recesses of the metal shed.....:(

thought it might be fun to bump up this thread

My favorite new garden tools/gadgets are:

Garden scooter DH got me for Mothers Day. I don't have to bend just sit and scoot along. It has a swivel seat and storage underneath.

Rose gloves. They sure do save my hands and arms.

Small long handled claw, hoe and shovel.

Rake grabber/picker upper thingy I got from QVC. Don't have to bend as much.

I STILL love the same two tools I did oh-those-many-planting-seasons ago!

I'm an old dog. That new trick stuff takes alot of getting used to for me!!! :p

Thank you for the tips on taking care of your gardening tools. I need to find the WD40.
My most used tool would have to be my gardening sheers. I use them everyday to cut of the dead roses and also to cut my flowers. My second tool would be the little shovel that I use to plant my seeds and bulbs.
