Garden Grill with milk and peanut allergy...

We went a couple of year ago. Our DS has milk and peanut allergies. He wasn't given very many options. He had chicken strips, french fries, tomatoes, and mixed fruit plate. The characters were really the best part of this location when we went.

We had a great experience there. The thing is, all of us like the kind of food that they serve there so plain versions of those foods were fine. I've said this many times on this board; people need to look at menus for restaurants and make sure that there are foods that the people with allergies will enjoy if made plain. If there are then those people will be happy. If people go in expecting foods to be made using ingredients that are not shown on the menu then they'll be disappointed. There's nothing wrong with choosing to skip a restaurant because the limitted menu doesn't appeal to you but it just doesn't make sense to me to go to a restaurant with a limitted menu and then be disappointed because there aren't choices that aren't on the menu.

I wasn't disappointed in the limited menu. I knew what to expect menu wise. I was disappointed in the chef. He came out and said all he could do for DS was chicken strips and fries. He wasn't going to do anything else. I asked about the tomatoes and fruit for dessert and the chef didn't want to do it, but I finally convinced him that DS would eat them better than he would the chicken and fries.
We had been to Liberty Tree Tavern the night before and the chef was amazing. He offered DS a plate like everyone else only with dairy free potatoes and no mac n cheese. I assumed since the menus (at that time) were very similar that he would get something offered to him similar to what we were having, but nope not the case. So we were spoiled the first night and were left disappointed at Garden Grill.

Wow, I've never had a chef do that. I'd be pretty upset if a chef refused to make or serve something, especially when it's simple and he has the ingredients. Kids are allowed to eat the adult food and vice versa so if his thinking was that he would only make kids food for your DH then he was flat out wrong. That's a chef who needs retraining.

We had a similar experience at Garden Grill a few years ago. My younger brother doesn't have any food allergies, but he has both Down Syndrome and Autism and does the standard "plop and drop" when he wants something that he can't have and doesn't understand why. This was the case the night we went to GG, and he did not want to eat any of the food on the menu. The chef came out and would not offer anything outside of the menu. My dad ended up running out to Electric Umbrella to get a hamburger and bring it back in. On the positive side though, they expedited sending the characters to our table to comfort my tearful brother, and took him off the bill.

The best advice I have seen (here on these boards) is to always research the menu, and call ahead if you anticipate problems.

I have been disappointed in Garden Grill as well. I am diabetic and have food allergies as well. The sugar free brownies they offer for diabetics have a sweetener I am allergic to. The chef offered me a Rice Krispie treat as an alternative. Yikes that would have sent me into a diabetic coma as my sugars would skyrocket. He was totally clueless.

We found the chief here to be quick and not too interested in our needs. DS has a peanut allergy but we are ok with made in the same factory warning. He did check warning for us but really made us feel he was being bothered to do so. Characters here are GREAT but we are not big fans of the food or staff.

We have eaten there a few times and all except out last time ( in Nov) we had a good meal and allergy needs taken care of. The last we we ate there we got our table and the server asked what the allergy was. We told her ( it is pork, strange but true). She said they have no pork on the menu. I told her that some people cook with the fat and asked if she could check. The chef never came out so I assumed that all was well ( my fault). We got our food and I asked her if she had checked and she told me they do not have any pork. After a few bites my hubby finds chunks of pork in the veggies. Longer story short we find out that she never told the chef that there was an allergy.
I know that this is a little bit off topic of what you asked, but if you do eat there or anywhere for that matter ALWAYS SEE THE CHEF. A lesson we have learned the hard way.
