Hello All! We just returned from a wonderful vacation at HHI. When we arrived last Thursday, on our way to our villa (which was on the 2nd floor) we noticed the neighbor's garbage sitting on the porch. We were more concerned with getting into our villa so we ignored it. The next morning we went about our buisness but the trash was still there.:confused3 OK. Maybe the people were planning to take it out later.

Now, this past week, HH had an incredible heat wave of temps at 95 minimum. By the time Friday evening rolled around, the bag was still there. So now I am getting a little upset. I think of the villa as my "home" and wasn't pleased to pass this garbage each time we went to the 2nd floor. My daughter was telling me to calm down. By that evening I took the neighbor's garbage and threw it out myself.

The next morning, Saturday, there was another bag outside their door!
Perhaps they weren't "owners" and didn't understand the rules. Anyway, we left the garbage again but I ended up throwing it away Sunday morning.
We had to check out on Sunday but I did mention to the front desk what was going on. The CM told me I could have called Mousekeeping and it would have been attended to. Perhaps I should have done that in the first place.
We left our 2 BR and moved into a 1BR. Don't you know, that when we later went past our previous villa, there was another bag of trash on the porch!!!

So, would anyone out there have been brave enough to knock on the door and talk to this family? I chose no confrontation and took care of it myself. Perhaps I am in the minority, but I really try to treat any villa I stay in as home. I try to keep it clean.

Thoughts?

Call housekeeping. You never know how a confrontation will turn out.

Putting your trash outside your door is common in the industry, just not with the DVC. Many resorts/hotels have rovers that will collect the trash and take it away.

We had a bag of dirty linens left outside our door by the Mousekeepers at SSR. It was there for several days even though I called every day to have it picked up. I bet our neighbors thought that we were "rule" breakers.

A minor confrontation would have been to put a nicely worded note under their door explaining that occupants are expected to remove their own trash, and maybe include directions to the trash room.

I guess a question might be, where is taking your trash to a trash room an expected action. I don't remember reading any room rules.

If you do not have daily housekeeping then the trash is your responsibility. If you choose to remove it from your villa it should be taken to the trash room. Now, to be fair, these guests may not have known about the trash room so I would have done exactly as dianeschlicht suggested and slipped a note under their door.

Being the devils advocate, where is it published that it is the guests responsibility? I don't see a list of rules in the villa or a tent card asking guests to take it out.

Rules or no rules, it's just common courtesy NOT to leave trash outside your room for days on end.

Unfortunately, more and more people seem to be lacking in common courtesy!

Perhaps it isn't written anywhere, but it also doesn't say that DVC will take care of it for you. The housekeeping guidelines are stated and trash rooms are provided and mentioned in the handout you receive at check-in.

We can discuss it all day, but it is simply common courtesy to take care of any mess you make that has the potential to negatively affect another guest...anywhere, not just at DVC resorts.

There was a similar post a few months ago and if I remember correctly, Mousekeeping instructed the guest to place their trash outside their door.

We have stayed at other non-Disney resorts and hotels and have been instructed to leave our trash in the hall.

My point is that we don't know what the guest was told or what they were thinking. Yes most of us take our trash to the trash room, still many owners don't even know that there is a trash room and if you call the Front Desk, they have trouble telling you where the trash rooms are.

I discussed the lack of trash location info with DVC management several years ago and apparently they don't think that it is an issue.

At AKV, the front desk CMs have told us to place it outside the door and that housekeeping will pick it up in the mornings. The CM did not know where the trash room was.

I've also called housekeeping on the phone, who have told us to place it outside our doors.

I only KNEW that this wasn't "ok" and that there are trash rooms because I checked on the DIS before my 1st stay as an owner. If you're only used to staying in hotels, it wouldn't be that "logical" to think that placing trash outside the door isn't OK (especially in DVCs which are more hotel like with inside corridors).

OP -- I would have just called the front desk to let them know.

I'm sorry, but even without being told, I would never leave garbage outside, especially in the hot weather. They had to be going in and out of their room. If it wasn't picked up, why wouldn't they call or ask housekeeping. I would've left a note on TOP of the garbage bag. I have never stayed at a hotel anywhere where you were told to put your garbage in the hallway, outside your door. At hotels housekeeping cleans your room everyday...in timeshares you know that you are not getting daily housekeeping and plan accordingly. With kids and smelly diapers we learn fast where the trash rooms or garbage dumpsters are!

If there was actual garbage in it, this could have attracted all kinds of critters that frequent HHI (has anyone noted the little traps discretely hidden in the bushes?). I would have made a visit to the front desk about it. I have trouble believing the resort would be happy with garbage outside.

Inside door setup with common hallway, Ok to leave in hall. Outside door set-up, take to trash so creatures don't get to it. I've been to HHI many times in 2 bedroom and it's my recollection that each villa has trash below? You have to go down the steps to leave your villa might as well take the trash.

If Housekeeping and front desk Cast Members are instructing guests to leave trash outside their doors, then I would (albeit reluctantly) propose that those instructions override any concepts of "common courtesy." Personally it's a little off-putting to me. But I have to agree that I've never read anything which instructs guests to handle their own trash. If resort policy is to tell guests to leave it outside the door, so be it.

I would prefer that they at least ask guests to contact housekeeping to collect the trash, but even if that were the case we'd never know if the guest was to blame for not calling or housekeeping for not collecting. In the scenario OP described above, it's entirely possible that the guest contacted housekeeping and they were lax in not removing the trash.

We have always handled our own trash but unless the resort policy changes, can't really look down on guests who are following the instructions they have been given. And I certainly wouldn't recommend confronting another guest to impose one's own concept of "proper" behavior.

I disagree. Any setup, take your trash to the trash room. There are trash rooms at all of the DVC resorts, not just those with outside doors. There is nothing worse than walking down the hallway of your lovely resort and seeing other people's trash.

I have not read it anywhere; it just makes sense. If mousekeeping has to keep running to specific villas to throw away trash at every request; they do not have as much time to clean the villas that are on their daily list. Thus, affecting everyone's bottom end.

I think though there are resorts that facilitate getting rid of your garbage easier than others. During our last stay Kidani Village it was really easy. As we walking to the elevator we just stopped, opened the door to the garbage room (clearly labeled) and threw the bag away before catching the elevator. By 'we' I really mean 'me' in my party of 9 but hey as one of two of actually owners staying in our room, I thought I should be the one of the responsible ones.

Many people do that. I remember the last time we were at BCV, the people walking in front of us did that. Their little daughter then looked up and said, "Daddy, why did you just throw your trash in those people's room?" :lmao:Daddy then had to explain about trash rooms.

We were staying at HHI last week as well. It was our first stay at this resort. My husband and I couldn't figure out where to take our trash so we just called the front desk and asked. Boy did we feel silly when we were told where the trash cans were below our cottage! Maybe your neighbor couldn't find the trash cans like us and choose to handle it this way. I wouldn't Jane enjoyed seeing that every day either. We really enjoyed the resort!

Ummm I disagree, I have never stayed anywhere expecting guests to take their own trash out. If this is expected in DVCs, after well over 20 bags of trash left in front of my door. I had no idea this is/was not allowed.

It is common place to leave your trash outside your door. It is not common place to stay in a resort and take your own trash out.
