Garage-Yard Sale Advice

I have no problem with the thread being borrowed.

I am actually probably going to cancel the sale and just donate. My Girl Scout life is getting in the way! LOL!

Also, several people have contacted me about the pins.... I think I have chickened out and will just keep them. Thanks!

Can I make a suggestion for all the little bottles of shampoo and stuff? Could you donate them to a group making boxes for soilders? I know the soilders really appreciate stuff from home.
Or maybe this is something your Girl Scouts could take on.....

Snowyprincess, you had some good suggestions! I think you are right and I'll try those next time. I have done the let's just call it even at $5.00 before and it did make someone happy. Good ideas all! Thanks!

I have a garage sale every year with my Mom and some other friends and relatives. The fuller the garage the better. We usually make about $1500 each year. We actually do really well on kids clothes. I mark items from .50 up to $10.00 or more depending on the item and we get it. (I usually have some items with tags still on them or if they are like new and brand names - those are the ones that go for $10.00). I usually have alot of outfits and dresses that go for $3 - $5 each. I usually have people buying armloads of clothes at a time. I don't sell anything that has holes or stains on it, most items are like new - if not I sell them for .50 to $1.00. I personally think that most of the people on this thread mark their items too cheap. If someone is interested they will ask if you will go lower and depending on the item and how far into the sale we are I may or may not. Baby items and kids stuff sell the best. Pack and Play's we have sold for $20. I sold a double stroller with infant carrier for $125.00 (it was like new and was originally $270). High chairs can go anywhere from $5 to $25 depending on the brand and the condition. Step 2 Buggy - I had a convertible one I sold for I think about $20. In our town we actually have a "Kids Sale" at our local community center. I rent a space for $20 and you can sell only kids items. You should see the people lined up to get in. Sales are awesome. Whatever I don't sell there I then put in the garage sale - if it doesn't sell there then it gets donated. Ok - enough rambling. Just my two cents that some items you can get more money for and you can always go down in price.

I have given up on holding yard sales -- in my neighborhood, people really DO want something for nothing. For example, I have had Christmas audiotapes marked 50cents and people will spend valuable time trying to get me to drop them to 25cents or even 10. I have others who will grab at items on my neatly organized tables and make a giant pile of things and offer me "five dollah". When I say, "you have about $50 worth of merchandise there" I get the "what? you don't want to sell to me?" Meanwhile, potential buyers have drifted away. And on and on. I no longer have the energy and time for that kind of negotiating.

I recently "discovered" a chain of kids re-sale shops known as KiDtoKiD. They pay more than a yard sale would net (me) and less than ebay but it is so much easier. I made $60 cash for two Rubbermaid tubs full of clothes, videotapes, wooden puzzles, Barbies and books. Anything that doesn't sell, I give to charity to bless someone else.
