Garage Sale Question

We are hoping to have a garage sale next weekend. I'm not too experienced at having them or going to them.

What is everyone's opinion on pricing? My friends seems to have varied opinions. Some say don't price anything in advance and let people ask you how much (but to have an idea in your head how much you want for an item), others say to price everything.

Thoughts?

Love sales that have everything priced. If there are no prices, I generally don't even stay unless there's something I really, really want. If most things are priced but a few aren't and, in general, prices are good, I'll ask, but if other prices are high, I won't bother. When we have a sale, we price everything - might not be each item (could have signs for clothes, books, etc), but someone walking up would know how much anything is without having to ask.

Personally if I go to a yard sale and nothing is priced I will leave without buying anything, I don't want to have to ask the seller how much every single thing I'm interested in costs.

Something that does catch my eye is if you have alot of the same size clothes or a large amt. of books or something to offer a bag or box price as well as individual prices, that works well if you have alot of something that you really want to get rid of.

I am of the camp that says to price everything. That way they walk up and see you want $50 for the dresser and know that is more than they want to pay so they can get the price in their head they want to negotiate for. It gives everybody the information they need.

If I go to a garage sale the last thing I want to do is stand there asking the host how much everything is. That could get annoying very quick, for you and for the person having to ask you how much everything is.

Just know that most ppl are always going to try to negotiate your prices down so if you really want a dollar for every pair of jeans, price them for $1.50, etc.

I had a garage sale last weekend. We made over $1200 I had tables where I had my clothes set up with a specific price. Individual items were priced such as toys, purses, shoes. Then I had some racks with clothes also priced. But, as others have said.. be ready to get less then what you priced things for. I had an item priced at $8 with tags and the lady wanted to give me $3.. we met in the middle and she paid me $6. On the second day of the garage sale I priced most things at 50% off to sale them.

Yea, nothing is more annoying than having to ask about prices...put prices on the stuff

I guess I can see no benefit to leaving things unpriced.

I understand when people don't get to everything and then I have no problem asking (if I've seen that the other items are priced fairly.) If nothing is priced I'll leave unless there is something I really wanted.

It's much easier to find an item I think should be $1 marked $2. Then I'll ask if they'll take $1. Otherwise if I take it up to them and they say it's $10, I'd have to control myself from making a snarky face and put it back. Then we both feel uncomfortable.

For a lot of things you can just use a sign: jeans $1, books 50cents, etc.

Good luck! Make sure you also have good signs with big letters and arrows. Nothing worse then trying to follow signs you can't read and never finding the sale.

I agree - I usually don't stay long if things aren't priced - I always assume that the seller wants too much for the stuff - and I only go to Garage Sales for CHEAP, GREAT deals! For example - scored a WDW rain poncho -brand new, still in original wrap for $1 yesterday.

I, like a pp, will make signs that say 'Everything on this table $1' - so that I don't have to price everything.

I also will tell you that if you want the stuff gone - price it LOW. I know it cost you $40 when new, and was only used once, but unless it is a VERY sought after brand or item - you likely won't get more than $10 for it. And that's only if it's like new and brand name. Most of the time I don't get more than $5 on any item.

Same here...I also generally don't dicker..If I don't want to pay what you want I walk away.
Also..PLEASE don't say...well it was $20.00 on Ebay so I want $20.00..I can put a pencil ON Ebay for a million dollars..it doesn't mean it will sell..and most people who do this just look at listings, not at what something actually sold for. I swear..next time someone does this to me I'm going to say "Wow..that's great..you should just selll it on Ebay then".
I was at a sale this weekend and a lady had some random Fiestaware pieces she hadn't priced yet and said we'd have to come back next week to see what she wanted, but she'd seen that yellow jelly jar online for $160. Uh huh...and did it sell for that price? and did the one online have a big chip on the lip?
Garage sales and Ebay are different animals.

We go to Garage Sales a lot, and many times we come home empty handed because of sales that don't price their items or price them too high. I've read that a good idea to help you with the pricing is to put items for sale at 10% of the original price (except for clothes and special items). If you want clothes to sell well, I highly recommend pricing everything the same. For example 'all shirts - $1'. That will also help you not have to price every little thing.

And remember, these things may have special memories or feelings attached to them, but no one wants to pay $7 for used shoes, or $1 for a kids book with crayon all over it
