I have a bunch of DS's outgrown clothes from this past winter, all in excellent condition, how much would you price those brands? $2 or $3 too much?

Used clothes are used clothes, regardless of the label. With very few exceptions, everyone sells outgrown clothes at yard/garage sales, so it's not a unique item. If you goal is to move them along, I think you need to lower the price. If you have a chance, go to a few sales in your area to see what others are pricing similar items.

Put the Ralph Lauren on ebay - put it in 1 big lot by size and you will probably make more than at a yard sale. Take lots of pictures - the "gallery" photo should be of the entire lot of clothes then take pix of items matched up together as outfits. Disclose any stains and take closeup photos. It really sounds like alot of work but it isn't too bad. Some of the lots do really well and RL is a sought after brand if the items are in good shape.

The Old Navy and Levi's I would price at 50 cents each at a yard sale - maybe $1 at most if the items are hardly worn.

I agree price to sell....I went to a garge sale where they had all old Navy and Gap at .50 each....I bought aslmost all of it for my DS. If it were 2-3 I may have only bought 1-2 pieces! WE all over buy when prices are good! Thank of it as a win win...they get a good deal, you make a little and you get rid of stuff! However....you can do better on ebay if the stuff is gently worn. I have found that most ebay buyers want stuff in near new condition...so I don't bother selling unless my stuff is nearly new! Good luck!

WOW, I sold DD pants for about $6 or $7 each and every single pair went. These were older sizes though (Juniors size 9).

$2.00 seems cheap to me?

You might check and see if there is a Once Upon a Child near you. They will buy your childrens clothes to sell at their store. You just take the clothes in and they check them while you look around in the store and they pay you before you leave. It's better money than you could easily get at a yard sale if the clothes are in great condition. Just be aware they only take clothes that are in season. When I get rid of DD's clothes I'll sell on Ebay if they are likely to get a good price (just search for similar items), then try Once Upon a Child and what is left goes in the yard sale for a quarter a piece and don't end up with anything left.

I think that things go for such different prices everywhere.

Where I live, I can sell a pair of Walmart jeans (kids 2-4T) for $2 if barely worn. Now once I went to my parents & barely sold anything!
Nicer Name Brand clothing - I can get $3-4 for 1 piece. Now the crappy stuff I can't even get $.50 for, pretty much has to be nicer clothes or name brand.

I don't have all name brand stuff, but I keep my kids clothes nice & I can get a few bucks each. Even an entire outfit (Carters for instance), like bibs & shirt - if still nice I can get $4-5 for it.

So, it all depends where you live IMO.

Good luck, I start preparing for mine (thats in 2 weeks) tonight.

In this area you can get $2-$3 a piece for Ralph Lauren but only 50 cents a piece for Levi's & Old Navy. Good luck & hope for a sunny day!

Sorry if this is a little OT, but what do you all typically price Gymboree at? There was a huge sale in our town last weekend with TONS of Gymbo stuff, but they wanted like $12-$20 per outfit! Most stuff was put together in 2-3 piece outfits, but still! It's a rummage sale! Is it me, or were those prices totally out of line?

WOW for around here that's outrageous! I guess it depends how accessible you are to a Gymboree. We have them here so we can shop sales there for those prices! Around here no more than $1 a piece for Gymboree, maybe not even that much.

I obviously did not think that the clothing was a "unique" item. I do however fail to find name brand clothing at garage sales *I* personally peruse, so I was asking what the typical going price was.

It's sort of silly to price them at .50 and I dislike the whole ebay deal, so I'll probably just pass them along to my nephews which is what I typically do. I'm having a garage sale to make some money to pay for DS's camp this year and the outgrown stuff he has probably wouldn't make much of a dent.

Thanks for the replies everyone! :)

Ditto! When DS was a toddler I sold 40-50 piece lots of his good name brand clothes on ebay as you described and made a couple hundred dollars per lot. I tried to put outfits together so that the buyer could see how the clothes would work for them. And I included measurements of inseams and waists because some brands vary in sizing.

Then I would sell the rest at the yard sale for $.50-$1. I always price them something like $1 each or 7 items for $5!:wizard:

New idea! Do you have any good consignment shops by you? Frankly, now that I work again I have no time for selling on ebay (and I'm too busy scanning the Dis!). Now I make an appointment at a consignment shop. I wash up all of DS's old stuff and bring it in. They take pretty much all kid related items such as sports cleats, shoes, clothes, winter gear, toys, baby furniture, and so on. I just dropped of several baskets of clothes last week and I'll expect to get a couple dollars per item. For example, shorts are priced $6 and I'll get 40% of that if it sells right away (which it will because it's name brand).

You'll have to hold onto your fall/winter things until late summer or early fall to bring them in, but it might be worth it then for a little extra holiday pocket money. :flower3:

I wish!! I love kiddie consignment shops, but the only one we have is Once Upon a Child but that's an hour drive each way and I think they have limited the items they are taking because they are overloaded.

Are there any seasonal kids consignment sales near you? We went shopping at one last weekend and there is another one this weekend that I am taking some outgrown things of my kids to along with some bigger items like Mason's exersaucer, jumperoo, bouncer seat and infant car seat. I only make 50% of the selling price but that is the same split as the local tiny consignment shop here in town.

If you have no other options then put the items at the yard sale and price the RL stuff at least $2 or $3 per piece if they are in good shape. Some money is better than none, right?

That's what I would do. I would price the Levi's and Old Navy $1 and the RL for $2-$3. Whatever doesn't sell you can pass to the nephew. That seems to be the simplest way to do it.

Good luck!
