I'm wondering what people pay for kids clothes at garage sales, as I'm helping my sister out. Yesterday I paid 50 cents up to two dollars per piece - but the $2 was for excellent condition, super cute gymboree stuff. This morning I just stopped at a sale and thought they were a bit overpriced, but still might have bought some things-until the lady used a racial slur & then I left...anyway.. what do you guys pay for kids clothes at a garage sale? Seems to me they should be pretty cheap since kids grow out of clothes so fast, there should be an ample supply.

I will probably pay more at a garage sale for kid clothes than many others. I enjoy dressing my kids well and recognize good brands cost more. It's just worth it to me.

I will pay several dollars for an outfit (top/bottom) in great condition. Same goes for a coat. I will pay a couple of dollars for a cute top or bottom. I have a pretty good idea how much clothes cost new and will pay more for clothes that originally cost more but if I like them. And I still feel like I am getting a wonderful bargain. If an item was from Walmart, I won't pay as much as an item from Gymboree. Unless of course the seller is pricing all the stuff at Walmart prices, LOL!

What I won't do is buy an extremely worn item just because it is cheap. Luckily, at this point, I have not been in the position to have to buy a .25 worn out t-shirt that is on it's 3rd owner. Never ceases to amaze me at the junk that folks will try to sell. I also will not try to talk someone down to nothing on a nice item. Why should someone basically give me something...I am a complete stranger! If they wanted to give it away they could take it to GoodWill.

Anywhere from .50 - $3.00, depending on brand and condition. I've also paid more for some things such as snowsuits, snow jackets, fancy dresses, suits, etc. Those things I will pay more for around $5 - $7, again depending on condition and brand.

Another thing I paid a bit more for was Disney store princess dresses. Again, $5-$7. If it was a deluxe on, maybe $10.

I pay $2-$3 per piece at the consignment shop so I'd be happy paying $1-$2 per piece at a garage sale.

But for NICE pieces like Gymboree, I'd be willing to pay $5-$7 per piece.

That's pretty in line with what I've been seeing; I was just curious though. The place this morning had $3 on children's place shorts , $2 on tanks and tees. I considered those prices to be borderline high, but not crazy.

If I have a really nice outfit I price it $3-$5. Jeans that look like new $2
Clothes that would nice enough to wear to school $1-$2
Playclothes - .50¢

I just finished a yard sale with 2 other friends. (Made $121.00!!) I sold mostly girl's clothes (size 5 to 7/8) and they went well. I sold every piece for 0.50. I only sell clothes in good condition - no stains, no tears. Some are more worn than others. Some have been worn once or twice. I priced a gymboree wool coat at $5. A London Fog snowsuit for $3.00. Some of the nicer dresses (Easter) were $3.00. Shoes were 0.50. Two old dance costumes went for $2.00. Alot of people were looking for kids' clothes.

My friends had pretty much the same prices on things. We wanted to get rid of it and we did.

In SW Florida the norm is 50 cents for kids clothes, $1-2 for adult clothes.

Unworn, namebrand stuff with the tags still attached $2. Anything else, less. Usually much less. Some of the sales my wife hit would charge a flat rate of $5 for everything you could stuff into a plastic grocery sack :lmao:

This helps me a lot. I am planning on having a garage sale next weekend. A neighbor of mine was having one today. I checked out her kids clothes. Shorts and tops were $1. They also had outfits for $3. The clothes were not Gymboree or Gap, etc.

I have a question. Do you use a clothing rack to sell the clothes? I do not have one. Could I put them in boxes for people to go through? I just thought that would not display as well, but I didn't want to spend half of my earnings on a clothes rack.

I would not pay $3 for Children's Place clothes because you can often get things on clearance there for not much more than that, plus they offer 20% off through e-mail pretty regularly.

If you don't have a clothes rack, you can try a pole (or even a long broomstick maybe) propped on two ladders. Or a rope tied between them. I usually display some things on a rack but never have that many hangers so I put some on tables, folded neatly and arranged by type of clothing and size. I wouldn't want to paw through a pile of clothes--even if they are nice it gives the buyer the feeling of everything being a mess. An old door or piece of wood on two sawhorses can be used if you don't have a lot of table space. Covering it with a dollar store table cloth makes it look nicer.

Lining your clothes up on tables is the best way. Makes them easy to see and easy to get to. If you keep them in a box it will become such a mess and clothes will be all over the place, especially on the ground, which I'm sure you don't want.

For hang up clothes, DH rigs a couple of poles between 2 ladders (we have to borrow 1 from a neighbor) and I put the hang up stuff there.

I price things a little higher than what PPs have said, mainly because my kids' clothes are good quality and well taken care of. A lot of bargaining is done in the area where I live, so I do tend to price higher than what I want for the item. Sometimes people will pay the asking price, sometimes they'll offer less. I have a bottom line price that I'll accept, so if they offer that, I'll take their offer.

Do you have a bi-annual children's consignment sale in your area (like Just Between Friends)? If so, I'd recommend saving your nice, stain free, name brand clothes & selling them there. It's a totally different crowd than the garage sale shoppers and they are willing to pay MUCH more for clothes in EUC. Even with the seller's fee, I come out way ahead selling consignment over garage sale.

Had a garage sale yesterday....had tons of girls stuff, Gymbo to Ralph Lauren to Hannah and Baby Lulu. Nothing Target, Wal Mart or Children's Place.

Had most items $2 each, $4 on Ralph/Hannah/Lulu dresses, $3 on Gymbo, $10 on Disney deluxe costumes.

Someone stole an H&M dress and I'm not sure what else (Someone came back looking for that dress and I know I didn't sell it but it was gone)

I had dresses on a rack and the rest in bins and the bins were terrible...people threw everything around, some got on the floor. I tried to sort by size in the bins but that was impossible to keep on top of. We had stuff on the tables but next time I try this, I'll have tables just for clothes.

People wanted to bargain to .25 for Polo dresses that were in great condition, bargain on NWT Gymbo shirts, it was interesting. Sometimes I do well on Ebay but thought I'd try this. Once Upon a Child here offered me $1.50 for NWT Gymbo boy's jeans.....I can definitely get more on Ebay or a garage sale for that. They offered .25 for Tommy Hilfiger Polo shirts, so I walked right out.

A consignment sale would be the thing I'd try next because I give away all the non-name brand item to charity but the name brand stuff, I'd like to recop some of the money on.

I got 4 pairs of Aeropostale shorts yesterday for my 14 year old. They were $1 each and no rips or stains. I would have paid up to $3 or so each if they had priced them for that.

I also got a Speedo brand tank swim suit (NOT the traditional Speedo!) for my 14 year old for $1. Perfect condition.

Like these:

Again, I would have paid more, $3-$5 for them as they need swim suits in 2 weeks to take to camp.

I just had a yard sale yesterday too. 90% of my stuff was Gymboree, Ralph Lauren, Nike, etc..... everything in EXCELLENT condition. I had $3 on the Ralph Lauren rugbies, and I was surprised that they did not sell well. The stuff that sold first was the 25 cent Target and Children's Place shirts.

I am going to hold onto the stuff and sell it a kids' consignment sale this fall. It is a pain to tag everything, but I know I will easily be able to get a few dollars more per item than I would at a yard sale.

I had a garage sale this year and made 700 dollars in just kids clothes! :thumbsup2

I have 5 kids, so I have a lot of clothes... but I priced what seemed appropriate to me (about 30-50% less than Once Upon a Child)... so they ranged in 2.00 to 5.00 for name brand clothing.

Stuff that was worn at all or was not name brand, was .50 or 1.00.

It sold. Nearly all of it. So, I think it really depends on what type of shoppers you have and how many people roll through. We had a community sale, so that helped a lot.

That's pretty in line with what I've been seeing; I was just curious though. The place this morning had $3 on children's place shorts , $2 on tanks and tees. I considered those prices to be borderline high, but not crazy.

That is high. Heck, I've paid $2 for brand new tees and tanks at the Children's Place outlet, and even at the store. I would never pay that for used stuff at a garage sale.

We have consignment sales here and name brand stuff goes for 4-5.00 for a good shirt, same for pants. I pay it too.
I've never been lucky(!) enough to see a garage sale where stuff was priced like you guys are talking about... can I come to your sales?! :rolleyes1

I would do a bi-annual consignment sale. I think it is much more of a pain to set up a garage sale than it is to tag my items and drop off my stuff, plus it brings in way more money! I usually sell name brand stuff, but I did sell a few off brand/no name items and even they sold for more than $.25. As an example, I sold a little (like 2T) plain yellow Wonder Kids tank top for $1.50 (very plain, no frills), a no-name (seriously couldn't find a tag on it, but it looked like something from Walmart) size 6/7 tie-dyed shirt that said "awesome" for $4 and a 3-6 months KC Chiefs sleeper for $5. I also prefer to shop a few of these sales than go from garage sale to garage sale looking for good kids clothes. I do find good bargains directly from the store sometimes, but not enough to fill a wardrobe for 6 kids.
