Gangs at Disneyland

Anyone have any recent input on Universal?

For me personally, things like rude or somewhat obscene sayings on T-Shirts and people using profanity greatly offend me, that is one of the reasons that I do not enjoy Knotts Berry Farm.

Can I just say that the first time we were going to stay at Anaheim, we booked it and then after I thought "oh no, what have I done, I'm taking my daughter to LA???" and I spent many sleepless nights thinking about what could happen.
When we arrived I noticed how family friendly it is there and we stayed at Radisson Maingate hotel and would happily walk around after dark.
We are now getting ready for our 3rd visit so obviously we have no "safety" issues when we are there, in fact we have commented about how well the American teenagers behave compared to the British ones and we have never ever heard the "F" word over there, unless it was from somebody British, which I am ashamed to say.
We have found the teenagers in the parks to be extremely polite and well mannered and this goes for KBF and Universal as well, we have never been to 6 Flags so can't comment on there.

Yes, lots and lots of gangs with shooting infront of all the rides! You better stay home.

LOLA - the only time you might have a problem is if you got lost on the freeway and got off in a bad part of town. We've never had a problem with this and have been out late at night in the tourist areas.

I live in San Jose. We have gangs a couple of miles from us but have never had a problem. Just stay away from those area with a lot of gang activity and watch the time of day you are in riskier area. Some of the small towns are more risky then the large cities.

Some of the parks make you turn these inside out or you don't get in. If you turn it back out - you get kicked out. I don't remember which ones.

We were at DL in December and felt very safe and comfortable. No problems walking from site to site, crowds were mostly polite--really, a great place for a family! :sunny:

O.K. off topic but since there are a lot of Califonians on this thread - How is legoland? We have a son 5 and daughter 11. My husbands main thing for going to California is Legoland, never been there. Of course we are doing everything else but just want to know what to expect from that park.

Legoland is great for families and young kids!

I love the fact that they have a "family restroom" as well as M & F. It is nice for changing diapers and also as a safety issue if you have multiple kids and can't watch them in both bathrooms at the same time.

We have NEVER felt unsafe at DL/DCA unless you count being unable to move on NYE because of the crowds. (NOT gang related)

We have gone to SFMM at least once or twice every year for the past several years. Last time we were there was on 2/17.

It definitely attracts a different crowd than Disney and I hate how you have to deal with the lines on your own (especially X where you just push & shove your way into the individual lines once you get in the door of the building) but I have never seen any kind of gang activity there. :confused3

Last time we were at Knotts we had to deal with a company picnic... it was a huge group, but definitely not a rough bunch. :rotfl:

Have not been to Universal for a couple of years so can't comment on that.

no gang activities at legoland when we went! it'd be perfect for your family. our DSs (5 & 3 at the time) really enjoyed going there. we were just there in the summer. the lines are no where near as long as disneyland...which we loved! and if your son is into bionicles, he'd love it there! they've got several bionicle figures (huge ones!), and bionicle rides! my oldest was beside himself!! they had a firework display thing at night...not sure if that's a summer thing or not. oh...might want to check to see if they're open, cuz i think they don't open everyday except maybe in summer months. have fun!! :flower:

Do I sense overeacting and less rationalizing?

If any of them are being infested by gangs, don't you think it would've leaked by now?

I have never seen any such "activity" at Universal. We go a few times a year.

This is exactly what I was thinking. California is huge. Are there gangs in California?...yes Are they everywhere in California?...no I understand people being worried about this especially if they have kids. But come on. All of California is not being run by gangs. I know for people not from around here to be concerned, but if there was a serious problem with gangs at DL, you would have seen it somewhere on the Dis before.

You would have seen it on the news too I would imagine, not just the DIS. NEWSFLASH: "Two new gangs moved into Anaheim today! One calls themselves the Mick's and wear only red and yellow short pants. The other are called the Goofs and wear green hats with long ears! They are very hostile toward one another so please be alert and be sure not to wear GANG COLORS in the vicinity!"

I'm also from the San Jose area as another poster is, and am aware there are supposed to be gangs locally. Even here I've never seen them, though I don't think I'd go up to Marine World in Vallejo again soon. Any park that has signs saying that you "park at your own risk" on their property, makes me a bit suspect.

I always feel perfectly safe walking to/from DL/DCA from the hotels on Harbor at night too. Once I did see a homeless guy sleeping at the bus stop though...

Sorry - I don't think it is overreacting but just asking a QUESTION. OVEREACTING WOULD BE CANCELLING THE TRIP.

Overreacting would be to never leave the house or go on any trips for the rest of your life. DL is probably the safest park to go to, or it feels that way to me. Okay, on February 5 on the way to the Timon Parking, some people were smoking pot. I could smell it in the air. It was a gang of kids puffing away. Were they bothering anyone? Noooo. We just left them alone and got on the tram. If they don't bother us, we won't bother them.

I used to live in southern California and Disneyland used to have a gang problem. There were instances of gangs intimidating visitors and there was even a shooting in the parking lot in the late 1980s/early 1990s. As a result of this,

yeah most of this stuff happened when the media was glamorizing gangs...when they made Colors, Boyz in the Hood etc...all these youngsters were being stupid and doing dumb stuff but its calmed down so much...you dont even see it hardly anymore...certain areas in LA..compton, LB, East Los, etc...will always have them there...and in SD? mostly they are from Downtown downward to the border...National City, Chula Vista, Imperial beach etc...dont even sweat that stuff...your not gonna be anywhere near it :thumbsup2

It seems that everyone here is forgetting that there is a vicious gang that frequents DL...They are called the "Stroller Mamas"...For fear of retribution all I am going to say about them is...Watch your ankles. ;)
