Games of 60's & 70's you would NEVER see today!

We used to put the whole package of cap rolls on the ground and drop cement blocks on them. I think we crushed more toes than caps but it was a lot of fun!
Your Dad's hammer worked a WHOLE lot better on the cap rolls! We also found that if you put flammable stuff on the caps before you pounded them (like motor oil) they'd often catch fire!

I think everyone's mind first jumped to Lawn Darts on this thread! I remember I got a set for Christmas one year from an aunt and uncle when I was about 10 and was royally ticked when my parents politely refused them!

I like all the memories reading this thread is bringing back! One toy that was my absolute favorite was the 1/2 board game 1/2 automated "Dark Tower"... it was so high tech at the time!

I :lovestruc this game. We still have it. I really wish they would start making it again. It's not dangerous- I think it was copywrite reasons that they stopped making it.

Our kids now just play their own version of lawn darts--with butter knives :scared1:. We just told them to not come whining to us if the cut off a toe. :lmao:

We used to use hammers on the caps until my Dad caught us once--it explained why his hammer was so beat up :rolleyes1

Oh, how could I have forgotten the metal "toy" gardening set I had when I was about 3?! Sharp, metal edges. Neighbor kid picked up the hoe and hit me in the head with it.

Profuse bleeding... ride to the hospital in a police car... stitches...

Guess it's better they make those things out of plastic now. :rotfl:

We all had Super Skates. We built ramps with bricks and plywood on the patio. Ouch!

When we outgrew the Super Skates, we took the wheels off and nailed them to pieces of plywood........instant skateboard.

We played with fireworks, too. We used to take those real cheap bottle rockets, hide behind the bunkers on the golf course and have bottle rocket wars at night.

Sometimes I wonder how we survived our childhood intact. Boy, did we have fun:lmao:

Any body heard a game called phoney bologne? My husband say its a good game. I never heard of it. Love these old time threads. :rotfl: jo

I might have had that game, not sure of the name. It was like a long plastic bologna that had slices that fit together like a puzzle.

Here is a great one from the vault, appropriate to this thread:
Consumer Probe

Consumer Reporter.....Candice Bergen
Irwin Mainway.....Dan Aykroyd

<snip>

Bag O'Vipers! :rotfl:

Remember shrinky dinks? Those were fun but man did they smell when they cooked. There was also those stained glass forms and you'd pour the crystals in and bake them. They were pretty cool too.

You can still buy both at craft stores, along with the cloth-loop potholder makers and Silly Putty. I have an egg of Silly Putty sitting on my desk right now, actually. :goodvibes

Does anyone remember Riviton? I found my kids' set in the garage last summer. It was recalled but we never sent it back. Think it'll be time to throw it out this summer unless I did toss it last year.

I can't believe that Green Ghost came up. I remember being disappointed when I got that game and discovered that the ghost didn't disappear on it's own. lol ( and the snakes were just pieces of rubber bands.)

I went through several sets of the glass "clackers". I am soooo lucky that I did not suffer eye damage as those things were always shattering and having bits fly off of them.

Had a bb gun (in elementary school) and the wood burning set, slip n slide and easy bake oven... but heck we use to climb to the top of trees that were out over the concrete road. :scared1:

I have another nominee for "dangerous toy" I can't recall the name of it, but it was basically a hose with a high pressure metal nozzle attached under a very thin piece of orange plastic with a face on it. You turned the hose on and the thing would go "wild" twisting itself around your neck, hit you on the head with the metal nozzle, then be stuck there with the jet nozzle spraying you in face where you could hardly breath. Oh yeah, that was fun. :sad2: Later someone came out with a new version of that toy but it was a short hose, all soft plastic stuff and low pressure. Mine was more like a fire hose! rofl.

Edit: I think that the name was " water wiggle" ?

I believe it's called Water Willie (Willy?)...when they were kids, my husband's friend gave himself an accidental enema when he tried to sit on it!!! :scared1:

I grew up in the early 80's... but still...

Skip It? How many times did I trip myself up on that thing!

And what about that thing with two balls and a balancing board in between that you jumped on? I fell HUNDREDS of times on that thing! :rotfl:

Is it a Pogo Ball? I had one...never could jump on it, though. I'd bounce once and then fall. :sad2:

I had a toy in the 70s that was so weird. It was a Shrunkin Head maker with Vincent Price on the box. You would put a peeled, carved apple in it and it would dry up and become all puckered. Then you would put in some beads for the eyes and some weird hair. It was totally bizarre but I put that shrunkin head on some yarn and wore it around my neck...and freaked out my teacher.
OMG!!! Have you guys seen the Simpsons where Marge and Lisa use a craft kit while Bart and Homer are at the SuperBowl? I always thought it was so random, (they are making eggs with funny faces) but now that I know there was a carved apple Vincent Price craft kit, it totally makes sense. Awesome.
I'm also going to say Slip n Slide. I think they might still be around, or some variation of it, but I got a concusion on one when I was 11. No good!
I can't even imagine how I thought it was fun. Tried it as a semi-grown up, and it hurts a lot! Throwing yourself at the ground with a thin sheet of wet plastic to cushion the blow.
2 balls (glass if you are older, some sort of reeeealy heavy plastic if you're a little younger) on the end of strings attached at a tiny handle. The object was to get them swinging very fast, in opposite directions, so that they clacked together at the top and bottom of the "circle" they made in the air.
In my generation, it was all made out of soft, crappy plastic. Usually a toy at an arcade for about 10 tickets.
A couple years ago, I mentioned the Toot Sweet tootsie roll smoosher thing that came out in conjunction with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. She had never heard of the thing (and made me feel old) so I bought one on ebay. It's still awesome.

I have never heard of it either, but it's freakin awesome. I love musical treats!

Dude, sell it on ebay! If it was recalled, there's bound to be someone who will pay big money to get a copy!

ETA: Well, there's one listed with zero bids...nevermind the big bucks!

You guys are cracking me up! :lmao: I had the lawn darts and LOVED them although we played ""how close can you get" to each other-until my Grandmother took them away from us.

I had a Zim-Zam that my little brother got clocked with a few times. :rolleyes1 Apparently a tennis ball on a string hurtling around in a circle at 400 miles an hour bruises.

Is it a Pogo Ball? I had one...never could jump on it, though. I'd bounce once and then fall. :sad2:

Yep its a pogo ball. My sister and I got into a ton of trouble for tricking gma into getting us one :lmao: My dad used to set up obstacle courses in the house to see how well he could do. His best- a fan on a pillow.

I remember that as it neared the forth of july, we could buy fireworks.

we used to get roman candles and then shoot the fireballs at each other.

When we were really young - well under ten - my brother had a Mr. Machine 'robot' that he could take apart (and put back together). It was off the market for a long time, and the newer version didn't provide the experimental :teeth: option. You can still get the old ones on ebay, but they cost!
