Hi all!

For those doing the galloway Goofy (or dopey) training plan ... on the weekend back to back long runs, the plan indicates to walk the saturday and walk-run the sunday run. do any of you run-walk both? (or run both). furthermore, if you follow exactly as specified (walk sat, walk-run sun), what do you do during the actual race? (walk the half then walk-run the full?)

thanks!

I don't actually think it matters as long as you get the longer run miles in. So, run, run/walk, walk or even skip the shorter of the two runs.

As far as race day, I would approach the weekend as two separate training runs. Forget race pace or other faster paces. Start off a little slower than your training runs to try to fight off any adrenaline pace boost. Run at the slower pace for at least half the race and then let the race day dictate where you head after that.

There are lots of folks who walk the half over race weekend. That is an acceptable strategy IF one has trained to walk that far. If you are training as a run walker, skipping the run segments can add stress to the stabilizer muscles, fatigue them and actually hurt your Sunday race. I submit that walking 13 miles when not training for an exclusive walk is no different than running in a new piece of gear and one should not attempt something new on race day.

Lots of words to say, run/walk Saturday if that works best for you and most definitely run/walk the are weekend - preferably just a little slower than you would do this weekend - at least for the first half of the race(s)

I tried to walk the first day (well saturday) when the longer ones started and I just cant do it. I had to run walk it.. It's what I'm going to do, so why not train it that way. I am also FINALLY getting myself to slow the heck down and not try to go too fast. This last weekend with the 10 sat / 20 sunday I averaged about 15mm and I felt SOOOOO much better then I did even after my 1/2 in October. (i've had to adjust my plan and I wont actually hit 26 before the race, just 23)

I agree with Coach - if you're not planning to walk the half on race weekend (and by extension, are training to walk that distance), I wouldn't exclusively walk any of the training days, either. I'm a run/walker for long races (half/full) and I generally stick pretty religiously to my short intervals (except when crowding, etc., precludes it). For Princess this year I ran with a friend who had recently had knee surgery and I followed her lead, which had us jogging for solid stretches, and then walking for long stretches as well. The next day I was sore in all kinds of new places from the long walking stretches - I would not want to be facing that on a day I had to run a marathon.

The year I ran Goofy, my solution to keeping myself under control for the half was to (a) shorten my run intervals while keeping my walk the same, and (b) stopping for pretty much every single photo op. According to my Garmin, my moving time was something like 25 minutes shorter than my total actual time (though there were a couple of potty stops in there too). So that's one strategy.
