I saw the lines at O'Hare this morning for these new procedures on the morning news. Looks like I will be getting to the airport VERY EARLY in a few weeks!

This was on our news the other day. I am sure that there will be people that will complain, but I'd rather that they take the extra precautions.
In 2002 we flew in December, and in Phila we had to take our coats off and put them on the belt to be xrayed. Hopefully people will be ready, this may slow things down a bit. We always give ourselves plenty of time at the airport. I'd rather sit and read a book at the gate instead running around like crazy to make my flight.

TSA finally addressed the complaint by some women who had to take off their jackets while men in front of or behind them did not.

Another good thing that came from TSA, overhead bin space is shared better because you are only allowed one carry-on.

For a future poll, if you had to choose just one, which would it be: (a) pat down, (b) full body X-ray, (c) strip search?

Flying out of Buffalo in January we have always taken off jackets and bulky sweaters to go through screening. Dh always gets wanded, he always beeps (I suspect he has a metal plate in his head), the kids now expect to watch Daddy take off his shoes, and 'assume the position' We just stand by and wait. The first time we flew it was right after Sept. 11 so we told the kids they would be checked over by security. Ds(6) was disappointed he didn't get wanded so the security guard humoured him and ran the wand over his head

Yeah right, one carryon. I counted the other day. There were a bunch of women with the purse, briefcase and suitcase at carry on . (that is THREE items) and I see men with the same kind of stuff all the time.

I would LOVE to see that one carry on rule enforced more.

I flew out of Dulles/Washington on September 10. I had a sweater wrapped around my shoulders and I was told that I needed to remove the sweater. This was the first time that I needed to do this. I am not suprised about your post, thanks.

DH's CHECKED suitcase really got the once over yesterday. He was flying internationally, and had 4 cosmetic bags with Lotion, Shower gel and Body Spray in them to give as gifts upon his arrival. The TSA agent opened every individual bag and did the explosive check on them. Our little regional airport is a training center for TSA employees, so we have been seeing alot of these newer measures (jackets off, etc.) for a while now.

nothing new here going out of PVD, we've always taken our coats off or left them in the car and we open our laptop and turn it on just before getting to security

I usually wear sneakers and never have had to take them off, however, my daughter wears regular shoes and has to take them off everytime we leave PVD or BOS.

..... if people use common sense and listen to the agents, you get through quicker and it's for our own safety.

My husband flies out of O'Hare weekly and said it was a zoo this am with the new requirement there of removing coats/jackets.

At Midway in Chicago, we've had to remove jackets for our last several trips to MCO. 'Tis a mystery!

myself and DD 3 flew home yesterday from Atlanta. I was picked for the "new" security checks. If you think your shoes have metal on them then you should take them off its your choice. I had to walk through the metal detector and they "wand" you and then hahaha ..you get well ...felt up hahaha. My DD made them check her to she was upset that she didn't get to take her shoes off. We would have been though alot faster if we weren't all laughing so hard. All in all it really didn't take that long and wasn't bad of course we flew into Atlanta during Ivan so I'll take airport security of very bad weather any day.

We've been taking coats/jackets off at DFW for quite a while now (at least in the AA terminals) so I don't think it will make a difference here.

My thing is where are they going to draw the line between protecting the country and individual freedoms.

I have no problem taking off shoes, coats, sweaters and putting all the necessary jewelry and such but the new secondary screening procedures make me extremely uncomfortable.

If I understand it correctly, if you beep or get selected by the airline for 'secondary' screening, you get a full pat down.

Let's think a minute...would a terrorist with plastic explosives leave something metal on their person and leave the door open to get screened? Most of these people have this planned and getting caught is not part of their plan.

Personally, I think they need to adapt the current metal detector doorframe we walk through with a plastic explosive detector. If they can set it up to do checked bags, then you can set it up to do people as they walk through. Yeah, it will cost money and it will take time, but I find this to be a good compromise between personal liberty and protecting the country. It also avoids shaming people with full body searches who have done nothing to warrant them except buy a ticket to fly.
