I've noticed a fair number of posts where people are just posting in order to subscribe to a thread.

You can subscribe without adding a post by going to the top and pulling down under Thread Tools to Subscribe to this thread.

I think that a lot of people just don't realize what is under those tabs at the top of the page, so they just post to the thread.
