I am planning a trip in June and we would like to stay at the cabins. We asked for a rrom near the bus stop because my son has enduance issuse and asthma and can not walk very far. We rent a stroller once in the park, but that dose us not good at the resort. I was wondering if any of you had stayed ther and if maybe I should ask for a handicap room ( if they are closer). Any help and advice would be great. We are a family of 5 so it is hard to find rooms big enough on a budget.

Your best bet is to rent offsite a stroller and there are some listed in the FAQs. The following is a great company that makes special needs strollers.

Overall they are cheaper and you can save go places easier and save the kid the energy for playgrounds and character meet and greets. I do not know where the disabled cabins are but you can talk to the fallowing people and see what they can do for you as they handle all disabled needs for resorts.

We have stayed in an accessible cabin twice and they are NOT close at all to the bus stop. Your best bet is to ask for a cabin near the bus stop for medical reasons. There's alot of walking though at Ft. Wilderness and if your son has asthma, be sure to think about all the "nature" that might trigger an attack- I'm not sure if that matters, but there's alot of foliage and different plants. You might also want to consider the larger DVC units. Sometimes renting points from an owner is less costly than paying cash via DRC. With some of the codes and offers available now it might help your budget though to check it out via DRC. I would also think about renting a stroller to conserve his energy or renting one of the golf carts for your family to get to/from places w/in Ft. Wilderness if you decide to stay there.---Kathy

thanks to both of you for the information. It helps alot. His asthma is triggerd by him getting winded, but his brother has alergies so thanks for the reminder to bring his meds.

We have stayed in the cabins 5 times and I know that the disability cabins are not the nearest to the bus stops. Make sure that when you make your reservation that you request a cabin near a bus stop and state the reason for it. There are quite a few cabins that will suit your needs. You should also call Fort Wilderness at 407-824-2900 or fax them at 407-824-3508 five days before your arrival to restate your request and the reason. You will love the cabins and Fort Wilderness and even though people say it is hard to get around it is really only because they do not take the time to read and understand the info given them at check in. My DH has mobility issues and we have found that it is less of a walk to the bus stops then in a resort like the Allstars. We have never rented a golf cart except for a few days to see the decorations at Christmas time. The new bus routes make getting to the Meadows very easy too. Have a great trip.

We stayed at a handicapped cabin in 2006. They are not close to the bus stop like others stated.

We rented ECV's offsite. They helped my mom and I get around.
