imho
I've got a 2007 Coleman Bayside popup, 12 foot box, slide-out dinette, air, bike racks, loaded with gear tips the scales at 3550. The slide-out was a great step up from the first popup we had. We pulled with a 2008 Chevy full size conversion van with the 5.3 V8. Probably drug it over 30,000 miles at 70mph and 13mpg. Uncle had a 10 Jayco popup pulling with a Chrysler mini van. He thought it is ok, but went with a small hybrid that he was so happy with, saying it only weighed 3500. What he didn't notice is that it sticks up in air a lot higher than his popup. He ended up trading for a hemi powered Durango and complains about the gas milage. I hooked onto it with my full size van and had trouble keeping the cruise on at 70, I could run 65, but was just pushing too much air at 70. Then I went home and grabbed my 2014 Grand Cherokee diesel (love it) and hooked onto his hybrid. Set the cruise at 70 and it did ok. It was running in 7th gear instead of 8th, but it pulled and felt ok. Weight isn't the only consideration, the wind you have to pull is also a big deal. My Chevy van was also a high top and I thought the air might flow around the hybrid better, but there was still a big drag. We recently really upgraded, so what we pull isn't a factor anymore.
