I am in the process of building a home and will be needing basically a whole house of furniture. I am not opposed to buying room by room, but I might be able to buy all at once(I will know for sure by Friday).

A friend mentioned to my DH about going to NC and sending a truck up- Has anyone ever done this? How is the savings? Where are the best spots? Is there a better time of the year to do this?(I have heard the fall is when furniture stores run their best sales)- but wondered if it was different for NC.

Anyone have other experience like Direct Buy? I like traditional contemporary.

Thansks for your help.

I live in the furniture capital of NC. ;) It depends on what you are looking for honestly. After furniture market is the best time to search for deals but as long as I have lived here, I don't ever remember when that is. I will check for you though if interested.

Market is April & Oct. - If I was shopping I'd head to Hickory, NC area especially the HWY 321 Corridor between Hickory and Lenoir NC. It is lined with furniture stores including many factory outlets. The International furniture market used to be held in Lenoir, NC many years ago before in moved to High Point, NC.

PS - Stay far away from Direct Buy.

You can also find what you want locally, write down the brand and style, call some NC stores for pricing, and order it. They will deliver it to you. I did this and saved several hundred dollars, plus upgraded the fabric.

My sister drove to NC (But she only has about a 4 hour drive) and she found a great deal on a dining room table.

Furnitureland South is a popular one, but when I price checked, I found some other stores had better prices. I got a list of stores from a book I checked out at the library. It was by Kimberly Causey. She has a couple books. One is outlet furniture buying and the other is The Insider's Guide To Buying Home Furnishings. I think they both have NC stores listed.

Since I live in Lenoir, you would think I would have known when markets are but thank you for telling the OP.

We went to Hickory NC about 13 years ago when we moved into our home. We did get good deals, but we had the stuff Delivered - most has to be ordered anyway...it took about 8 weeks or so i think.

We got a dining room table and buffet, wall unit for the living room and couches for the living room - have it all still now - though we need to search for new couches later this year!

FYI, not much to do around Hickory except look for furniture..

Hickory is halfway between Charlotte and Boone, NC. Plenty to do in the area.

So it sounds like late Oct/Nov might be a great time to go to get deals. I have SWA credits so flying will not be a problem and will also look into those book recommendations to. I never thought about looking locally and then calling them.

Thank you all for the great advice so far-I really appericate it !:thumbsup2

I bought kitchen table and chairs and living rom couch and two wing chairs from NC. This was about 20 years ago, I saved 52% on Kitchen set and about 45% on living room furniture. The delivery charge was comparable to the tax savings (out of state), unfortunately NY now requires that you claim the tax on items purchased out of state. I did what a PP suggested and got manufacturer names and model numbers. The companies I dealt with sent fabric samples to me to insure that they were correct.

I did the same. I shopped at a brand-name furniture store, wrote the company names and skus then called a company called AH Wayside. Got everything I wanted for about 35% less. Their shipping was the same as from the chain store! I have also purchased a couch & chair/ottoman from Furniture Land South. No problems at all.

I'm in Hudson, small world.

We live in Salisbury now but we used to live in Hudson.....Sawmills, actually, but a Hudson address.

I live right between Hickory and High Point.....the two major furniture areas. I prefer Hickory for deals. They're really not very far apart, so if you're coming from out of State you could very easily do both areas.
