I had accounts for my boys and myself there. Never had a problem in the 3 years we lived there. We moved last summer, and last month I went back to close the accounts.

I closed the kids' accounts, but they told me they couldn't close mine because I'd used my ATM card to pretty much zero the account out...leaving just change in it...and it hadn't cleared yet.

I asked the teller if this was going to be a problem. It's an account that charged me $10 a month service fees if the balance dropped under $1000. She promised me there would be NO problem...they wouldn't charge me a service fee.

A statement came at the end of last month. I ignored it. Another one came today...saying I'm $70 overdrawn!!!! It seems they DID charge me the monthly fees...and overdraft penalties for each one!!!!

I am going to call them first thing in the morning, but I am furious and sick to my stomach. This is a tight month for me anyway, and having to pay $70 in fees for FEES on an account I tried to close makes me furious!!!!

I guess my question would be that if you knew ahead of time this was an account that had a minimum balance requirement to avoid the fees, why in the world did you use the ATM to try and zero it out instead of just closing it outright?

Which is why I never close an account with a teller. I go to the manager or assistant manager.

Ouch!

My only concern is that you do shoulder some responsibility for the problem as you ignored a statement that would have indicated the account was not closed.

ATM transactions don't take a month to clear...so that statement would have given you a clue if everything was closed out.

You have now waited 2 statements and they may just tell you you are SOL since you decided to leave them anyway. Though I'm not sure what legal means they have to collect from a patron that discontinued business and they kept things rolling.

I had to close my chase account b/c they are starting a monthly fee in February. Thankfully--I finally passed the security screening questions. They called back on Christmas Eve to verify that everything is closed and that the check is on its way.

The teller probably was under the assumption that you would be closing the account within a day or two when your transactions posted and cleared.
