I work in a special ed preschool class. Some of our kids are autistic and some are there for speech/language delays. The kids in our class are amazing. All of us who work there love seeing their progress. Last year I cried when I heard a 4 year old finally say his first word!

When you get a group of preschoolers together, there are bound to be moments that are just plain hilarious! Despite their disabilities, all of our kids have the ability to laugh and they keep us entertained whether the mean to or not!

So, we just got a new boy who is definitely autistic. He is non-verbal so far but has shown interest in many things. We are still learning how best to engage him and we are trying to draw him into the classroom routines. Today during free play time, the other kids were playing in the block area. The new boy was sitting off to the side looking at his favorite book. I was sitting in the block area but made sure to keep tabs on our new guy. One moment, I looked at him and he was happily reading his Pooh book. I swear not 30 seconds later, I looked back to see him standing in the middle of the room buck naked from the waist down! He had removed his shoes, socks, pants and diaper and was dancing around without a care in the world! I was so astounded that I couldn't get a word out and just pointed at him and grunted. When the other teachers saw him, we all just started to crack up. It was an act of pure innocence and exhuberance. We decided it probably means that he's comfortable enough in the classroom to make himself right at home. Apparently, this is a frequent occurance at home and the babysitter's house too.

Needless to say, we quickly got him dressed and discouraged such behavior for the rest of the day. Everytime I heard him rip open the velcro on his shoe, I was up in a flash! We are glad that he feels so comfortable in our room. We just wish he would express it in a different way. It was pretty funny, though. Now, if only we can get him to hold a paint brush... :)

lol...that is so funny ! My dd class when she was graduating all went out to eat, whenever we were in line to be sitting all 10 of the kids got so excited and was cheering and laughing..when asked what was so great, one of the children explained that a lady checking out just got a senior discount and since they were all seniors they would get the same thing...hehehe, I loved it ! :teeth:

Speaking from experience, pre-school naked is cute, high school naked-not so cute. :rotfl2:

Autistic DS, then 14, came out of the swimming locker room with nothing on, looking for his towel. He was comfortable alright, but.......

lol...I work with these kiddos too... and I can so picture this happening

ditto my 14 year old DS also didnt se a problem with stripping off at POP's main pool. Gill

Yikes! I hope the little guy in my class gets over his stripping phase before he's 14! We run a pretty tight ship so he'll soon know which behaviors are allowable and which aren't!

Yesterday, the other regular aide was out so we had a sub. Her DS, who is now 9, was in our class several years ago and she helps us out by subbing when we need extra help. Anyway, after the stripping incident with our new kid, she told me something her son used to do. He had extreme tactile sensitivity and couldn't stand it if he wasn't 100 percent comfortable. If he got one little spot on his shirt, he would have to strip all of his clothes off immediately or he would have a tantrum. Once they were in a restaurant and he spilled something on his shirt. He stood up and proceeded to take all of his clothes off - pants, undies, socks, shoes, everything. Of course, they tried to stop him and were furiously trying to pay the bill while hauling him outside. Apparently, he flashed a few people before they could get out of there! Luckily, he's gotten over that phase and is more reasonable about getting messy!!!

My young is not autistic and once stripped in a restaurant at the age of 3. I wished I could have disappeared. It happens to all of us once in a while.
My mother told me I was a stripper and used to strip in the backyard as a kid. I hated to keep my clothes on.
