Funny responses from strangers...

Happens to me as well. "Oh you are Buffalo, the land of snow and cold." Or if I tell someone where I grew up: Bensonhurst in Brooklyn NYC, they asked if I know any mobsters. To shut them up I tell them "Ya my family.":thumbsup2:rotfl2:

CM - So where are you all from?
Me - Philly.
CM - Ooh, say "water" please it sounds funny when you say it!

I'm from Scotland (live in Edinburgh) and frequently get asked the following:

Do the men wear skirts?
Why dont you have red hair?
It must be amazing to live in a castle..
Do you have to hunt for your food?

When we were in WDW in September I met Merida who, bless her wee heart, was trying her best at a scottish accent. When we got to her and started speak she looked and said " och thank goodness, my fellow countryman to help me understand all these other people" and she was asking us how we pronounce certain things, whilst still in character :rotfl2:

Merida says " How do you say House from the low lands of Scotland"
I say "I just say house, but DBF says hoose"
Merida said " och in my part of scotland we say howsie"

Was really sweet actually.

So I had a random thought. When you are chatting with someone you just met while there, what kinds of questions have you been asked. Such as with me when I say I am from Detroit I have been asked if I have met Kid Rock or Eminem. Like They are my neighbors...lol another one more often is they just stop talking all together as if we are all criminals. Like yeah I had to shoot three guys just to get one the plane...lol

Ha ha. That reminds me my last trip I said I was from the Washington DC area and a woman said you must see the president a lot.

A lot of people do that, it seems. In college everyone who lived east of Ann Arbor was "from Detroit." No, you're from Livonia.

I get when your hometown is somewhere small that no one's heard of and it's a way to give then the general location, but everyone I knew used it like some kind of street cred thing.

Hey! Isn't Livonia where Mike Modano was born and wore his Mighty Ducks Mullet?

If someone is from MI and I'm not sure of where that is, I ask to show me on their hand:lmao:
I totally get the Vermont b/c I love White Christmas
I always say we're from north of Philly b/c I don't want people to think we actually live in Philly, but to say the name of our small town people would have not clue.

This reminds me of a video - state stereotypes in 2 minutes. (Warning - it is not PC)

DH and I were on our honeymoon and met someone from France who asked where we were from. When we said Philadelphia he said "oh like the Fresh Prince!" lol, I guess Will Smith is much better than some things Philly is known for!

eta - I should mention this was in 1999, before Will Smith was a big movie star.

I'm from Australia and this happened at Disneyland but someone, after discovering where I was from, asked me if I knew Russell Crowe. :lmao: I was so tempted to say "Yes, he comes around every few months for a BBQ."

I've also been asked by people at Disney (usually other guests) if we live in the "outback". We live in the city LOL. They figured we lived on a remote sheep farm or something :lmao:

I've also been asked if we have kangaroos as pets. We have two dogs :rotfl:

Should have told they "Yeah, but he moved out to BelAir" :rotfl:

When I lived in Vermont, I had someone ask me what state Vermont was in. When I sat there dumbfounded, they asked me if it was in New Hampshire or Canada.:sad2:

That's ok. We told someone we lived in NH, and they asked if that was in Canada, and then they said "no wait! That's in England right?"....we definitely don't have British accents...:upsidedow

I get these all the time:

How much of the city is still under water? Has much been rebuilt? (since Katrina)

When they find out I live and work in the French Quarter:

How can you not party and drink all the time? (Some of us do manage to hold down a job and live regular lives despite what the media might portray. Unfortunately, I do have bills to pay!)

Aren't you afraid of being shot? (the Detroit people understand this one!)

I'm from one of the most Northern cities in Canada. No, I don't live in an igloo or have sled dogs. Yes, we send our kids to school in -36F weather (I can't recall ever hearing of a snow day). Yes, I watch hockey. No, I don't know Bob from Toronto.

;-)

Crazy, eh?

Hey, that sounds like a beer commercial! :rotfl:

When my DDs told other kids at WDW that we were Canadian, they all assumed we speak French.

In a BWV hallway I got asked by a lady if I could bring her extra towels. I looked at her like what?? Her DH was walking beside her when she had stopped me but he just kept on walking, I think really embarrassed, while saying 'she is NOT the maid!' Yes, they were white. Yes, I'm of Mexican descent. And no, I was not wearing a mouse keepers uniform...

We are from nj, now living in nc. On a trip to wdw when we still lived in nj a cm asked where we were from when we told her nj she said "oh my I'm sorry." Lol I was laughing so hard.
We always get asked where we are from since we don't have the typical southern accent. I always get asked if know snooki and the jersey shore people. People think its so cool that we've seen then around and have pics of the boardwalk and stuff.

LOL I cannot hear Vermont and not think "Vermont. Must be beautiful this time of year. All that snow." But that's not a negative thing is it?

And I thought that maybe i was the only one that did that. Nice to know that some else remembers that line from one of my favorite Christmas movies!

In May when we said we were from near Toronto, we were asked if we still had snow ... nope when we left it was 70 degrees and they are shocked that it isn't cold year round. On another trip to FL, not WDW, a man from Maine was absolutely shocked that I watched Grey's Anatomy ... didn't think us Canadians got to watch American shows :scared1:I told him we even watch CNN so we can spy on you!!! lol

We tend to get ALOT of questions about our health care and employee benefits like maternity leave as well.

isn't it funny how people buy in to the stereotypes of different cities/states? I have met people who literally thought that everyone either drove a pickup or rode their horse to work in Houston and couldn't fathom why I didn't have an accent. ;)

I am totally with you on this.

People (who I assume must watch an awful lot of old Dallas reruns or something) ask all kinds of things when they learn I am from Houston/Texas.
"Which oil company do you work for?" None of them. Unless you count buying gas, in which case, all of them.
"The Cowboys/Texans sure suck/rock this year, huh?" No idea. I don't watch football.
"Is it hard to ride a horse?" Not particularly, unless the horse doesn't like you. In which case, I guess, for you, yes.

And my personal all-time favorite: "Have you ever been bit by a rattlesnake?" Not to my knowledge.

Have you been to Green Gables?

Green Gables in in Prince Edward Island. It is famous for being the fictional home of Anne (Hence, Anne of Green Gables). The one statement made about the place during the tour was. "This is the room that was Anne's, if Anne had been real." In other words, this could be any old house that we painted the gables green on and all you incredibly gullible people would pay money to see the place where a fictional character fictionally lived.

I went because my wife and daughters told me how much they wanted to see it. Being male, I hadn't read any of the books about it and thought it was a real person we were talking about. That single sentence turned an already boring trip into almost painful. On the bright side, there is a golf course that actually wraps around the house and I was able to beautifully shank a shot directly on the side of the building. Redemption was mine.:rotfl:
