I think you will find this amusing - although it was a "catastrophe" in our house last night!

Last night DS had a tennis match with DH and I wanted to attend. As I was leaving work on a mad dash to the courts my dd (13) called my cell phone and asked if she could make dinner, including a particular dessert her dad loves. She is reasonably accomplished in the kitchen so was I going to turn this offer down? Am I stupid? :jester:

I simply asked what she was going to make and she told me along with the ingredients needed (all of which we had on hand) so I told her to go ahead and gave her an estimated time we'd be home. I also suggested that rather than white rice she use either the brown or Basmatti rice. She did call again to ask if substituting carrots for broccoli would be ok, as she knew her brother hates broccoli.

Well we walked into the house frozen and starving (the match ran late and it was only about 47 degrees here with a pretty stiff wind) and seeing the table set with dinner being placed upon it was wonderful. So everyone washed up, sat down, and the proud cook began dishing up the cheesy chicken and rice casserole she'd made with the BIGGEST smile on her face you could ever imagine. She even served her brother first!

As she was dishing up for the rest of us he started eating and after swallowing the first bite he said (as only an older brother can) Jeesh! What did you do, forget to cook the rice?

Turns out the recipe called for MINUTE RICE and she didn't realize that with the Basmatti she used it had to be pre-cooked. When she told me the ingredients she simply said white rice and since we don't use Minute Rice that thought never crossed my mind!

Dad & I sent the brother to the refrigerator to scrounge through the left overs, wiped away her tears of disappointment and proceeded to eat a rather crunchy rice dish! The good news is by this morning she was laughing about it! Of course it helped that we were able to share a few culinary disasters of our own with her!

Glad she can laugh about it this morning! I'd call that an honest mistake since at 13 I'm sure I didn't know the difference between rices!!:D
My Mother knew someone who used whole cloves in her pumpkin pie once, instead of ground cloves.:teeth:

My but I'll bet that made an interesting pie!

Very definitely an honest mistake - and one I'm sure she'll never make again. We call that learning and it is a good thing!

Awww...I agree, it was an honest mistake..poor thing, I hope she wasn't too upset!! What a great DD you have though, willing to make dinner for you and the entire family!! How sweet of her!!

Reminds me of a story when I was younger, my sister decided to make Brownies for the family one day, well she forgot to set the timer and after awhile she realized that they were probably done...she took them out and they looked okay, but unfortunately they were so overcooked that when she cut them, they just broke everywhere! Well, of course, she still gets teased to this day about the Brownies that could knock a wall down!!:p:p

:)

We all have to learn from our mistakes eh? I'm so impressed that a 13 year old is interested in cooking. That's wonderful. I consider myself a pretty good cook and still find myself making mistakes in the kitchen! Live and learn! I'm glad she was able to laugh about it.

Isn't it amazing the things us parents will eat the please our child chefs?

Candi,

It sure is amazing! I kept thinking this stuff is going to expand when it sits in my stomach hope the Tums are handy! Amazingly it didn't seem to do that. Must be because the Basmatti isn't so highly processed.

And I agree everyone - she IS amazing! She can be a royal pain in the neck at times, typical 13 yo! So we aren't nominating her for saint hood yet. :p

Will be passing along all of these other boo boos to help her continue seeing the humor!

Uh oh! At least she can laugh about it now. I hope she still wants to cook.

Much to my chagrin she is more determined than ever...this weekend it was a baking spree

She made homemade peanut butter cookies Sunday that drove me insane! I caved and ate one and then wished I hadn't. Oh well, today is another day.

Don't get me wrong, I love that she wants to cook but it can be incredibly tempting when one is trying to be very careful about what is eaten to have an experimenting cook/baker in the house!

She even did her science project on baking - varied the level of flour in chocolate chip cookies.
