Kids around here do both. They get more candy at the trunk-or-treat but there's more ambience going house to house.

As I grow consistently older I realize that trick or treating has nothing to do with the quantity of candy or the decorations. What it did do was provide memories. I suspect that my memories of house to house "begging" candy are considerably warmer than that of those that only remember the short cut of feeding out of the trunks of cars. It's no wonder the world is so angry these days. No one has any feelings of accomplishment or just plain fun of being part of a semi-adventure once a year. Neighborhoods in this area still have the traditional door to door and the haul is usually sufficient to keep thousands of dentists doing quite well.

I do wish that when I was a kid people were always trying to outdo each other. We used to get those questionable popcorn balls (immediately tossed away) and home packaged things like candy corn. Now neighbors feel compelled to supply full size candy bars.
