The old EHL (Eastern Hockey League) was very similar to Slapshot. I believe the Charlestown Chiefs were based on the Johnstown Jets.
The EHL was my first experience watching hockey. Jersey Devils. (Not the current NHL team). The league went defunct in 1973 and somewhat reorganized as the NAHL. North American Hockey League, which was a bit tamer.
