Nah, Mercurochrome isn't illegal; it's just hard to find because there are much better options available that don't make people scream and look like they are bleeding from an artery. Man did it sting! I believe it's ilegal now.
The other one he used, and I still swear by it today, was a strong-smelling linament called Balsam of Mhyrr. It is intended for use on horses, but it is great on cuts and burns. I have a bottle that is really old, but you use so little of it that it lasts forever.
