Funny Memes

I still double space after a period. It's the way I was taught and I've been doing it that way for over 40 years. No one has ever even mentioned it, let alone complain about it.

Oh, and I also use the Oxford comma! Lol

(Now....get off my lawn!)

ALWAYS use the Oxford comma - people at Oxford do!

The double space is not necessary with computers as modern word processing programs use automatic kerning. They actually make a slightly larger space after a period, but not as large as two. If you double-space it will create "rivers" in the text. If you were using a manual typewriter (or possibly very old wrod processing software - think blue screen & white text), you would still need to do it.

This one hits a little close to home 😀

I shall never give up my extra space. NEVER.
This one was a tough one to break, but I eventually did it.
NEVER
That and the return of the Oxford comma. I am so happy that I just finished college and no longer have to obsess over remembering to insert that extra little comma.
I homeschool DD and as I was teaching commas, I knew it wasn't how I learned them. I'm NOT crazy! Yay!

You really should - that is, unless you want to do all your typing on an IBM Selectric. MS Word should flag extra spaces as grammatical mistakes.

I've never had it flag in all these years regardless of what settings it was on. The only reason I knew it had "changed" was because a young editor asked me to stop ten years ago or so. I told her I was sorry, but as the 1989 county typing champion, I could not comply.

You can change that in Word under Options > Proofing > Grammar & Refinements:

Set that to one space and it will flag your antiquated double spacing for correction. I know it's a tough habit, but documents will look better using a single space.

For me, Microsoft Word has never flagged my use of double spacing after a period.

I will proudly wave the flag of double spacing! I shall wield the sword of the Oxford comma! I shall die on this hill! Lol

I'm all about proper form. It took me a while to break myself of double-spacing after a period when transitioning from typewriters.

I like using things that look wrong, but are still proper. Like the possessive of names that end with an s by adding 's. Like Moses's.

The difference being the Oxford Comma is still correct and not dependent on the equipment you are using. It is optional, though all good and decent people use it. 😉

I agree with you. The apostrophe only is for when the plural posessive ends in S.
