I've been doing my own laundry for close to 30 years and have never lost a sock. One time I thought I had, but found it still in the clothes hamper and one other time I had left it in the dryer. They do also get caught in other clothing and if you don't wear something for awhile, you won't find it right away.

actually, I don't recall losing any socks since we got a front loading machine (MANY years ago). I'm also quite careful with our socks as I knit them and they are wool
