Man, I hear that! My car is 20 years old, and I rented a car recently that had the keyless start, lane keeping, and all that and I had to re-learn how to drive it. Driving home there was a bad thunderstorm and the car whent into some kind of "lightning mode" with a symbol ont he dashboard I had never seen. I looked it up later and it means "Forward Radar Obstructed," I suppose by the rain. I was pretty shocked that the car had Radar!
Then again, I was perfectly able to drive the thing and translate the skills pretty quickly. I had to practice for a moment in the driveway (and it took a minute to get the media player acting right), but I guess if the typical controls are pretty standardized, then the ships in Star Wars may be pretty universal. People do use them like cars. Of course, the controls often look radically different, but that's just set dressing. I read once that back in the old Expanded Universe that Luke took to the X-Wing very easily because it is manufactured by Incom, the same company that made his "T-16" that he flew around on Tatooine. Only nerds like me care so much about stuff like that of course!
