I have a friend who will be moving to Alabama next week and this weekend a bunch of us girls are going out for dinner and drinks as a send off and I was thinking of getting her a funny going away gift.

But I can't think of anything good. I was hoping to play on the fact that she's moving to Alabama or that she's moving away from Ohio, but nothing is coming to me.

Anyone have any good ideas for me? :)

I live in NJ and I have a friend moving to Florida...a group of us are taking her out later this week. I made her a New Jersey theme basket. So far I have Jersey Girl tshirts for her and her dd, a NJ mug and magnet, some NJ lottery tickets, salt water taffy from the Jersey Shore, and some Giants football stuff (she's a Giants fan).
:)

The times I have purchased a going away gift for someone moving out of state, I have purchased "cow-print" hotpads. We live in Wisconsin - and heck - who can't use hot pads.

Not that cow-print hotpads would be the ideal solution for you - but hopefully it will get your creative juices flowing...

Are there any "disctinctively" Ohio foods that you could give her a gift basket of? In my neck of the woods, there is a local business that makes great pretzel dips, which makes a nice gift basket. An example is here.. Another thing - Wisconsin is known for cranberries - so there are plenty of cranberry-types of items that would make great gifts too.

Again - my examples are for Wisconsin-based gifts - just to get you thinking.

Good Luck!!!

Funny you mention the NJ theme! I am originally from NJ and a couple of us are planning a girls' weekend at the Jersey Shore next month and she was supposed to go with us until this move came up and I was thinking of putting together a small gift baskets of stuff making fun of NJ so "she would feel like she wasn't left out", but thought it might make her feel bad (I was thinking, self tanner, fake nails, etc.).

Well I could do buckeyes (chocolate covered peanut butter balls) and people here are OSU fanatics but I'm not from here originally and not into them, so I don't really want to do an OSU theme.

Maybe I'll do the buckeyes and NJ shore theme basket, who says it really has to make sense and tie together, right?

If you do an "Alabama" theme, you could give her agift basket with the Lynyrd Skynyrd CD that has "Sweet Home Alambama" on it. You could also get the dvd movie also called, "Sweet Home Alabama" that stars Reece Witherspoon and Patrick Dempsey (It's a chick flick). Add a Crimson Tide Alabama T-shirt. You could also look up the state bird, animal, flower, etc... and include a packet of flower seeds, bird seed, etc...

It's not really a "funny" gift, but that's all I could think of.

Alabama-themed stuff. "Sweet Home Alabama" - both the DVD and the (Allman Brothers) CD. The self-titled CD from the band Alabama. A recording of "Oh, Susanna" if you can find one. Anything to do with Bubba Gump.

Alabama's state foods are the pecan (nut), the blackberry (fruit), and the peach (tree fruit). State flower is the camellia, state wildflower is the oak-leaf hydrangea, state rock is marble. State mammal is the black bear. State nicknames are "Yellowhammer State", "Cotton State", and "Heart of Dixie". License plate motto is "Stars Fell on Alabama".

Take any of that and run with it?

Jersey basket I did I included Tastey Cakes, Taylor Ham, and some Stephanie Plum books One For the Money.

Alabama I don't know. I might do an all in fun redneck kind of basket (not that I am in anyway implying everyone is a redneck in Alabama- but for a joke)

how about a set of those bubba teeth...

 Meh. I don't think I"d go there...

OP, I grew up in south Alabama. The things that I most remember from my childhood are magnolias(yes, really!), dirt roads, hanging moss, shrimp with the heads on, pecan orchards, and authentic fried chicken. :lovestruc Of course, I lived out in the country(about 5 miles from Bayou la Batre, to be exact.) My upstate friends grew up with state of the art healthcare, beautiful mountains, industry, orthodontics, golf, and weekends on the lake. They might eat grits, but they wouldn't have recognized "bubba teeth".

The state motto is "Alabama the Beautiful." Perhaps you could go in that direction, maybe with a little "Sweet Home, Alabama" on the side. I know you're going to really miss your friend. Maybe let her know that she's moving to a really nice place. :goodvibes

If she is a football fan, you could get her some University of Alabama stuff...Like a stuffed elephant or a bama t-shirt.

Nope, sorry. You definitely should notget her this! You should be a good friend and get her some Auburn stuff. Make sure she gets started off on the right foot.:thumbsup2 Tell her we're glad to be getting a new neighbor and welcome to the great state of Alabama.:welcome:

:rotfl2: Um, roll Tide!

I love the AL themed basket. Is she moving to a small town, or a large one? I didn't catch that in the first post. The smaller the town, the more bible-beating/redneck stuff she can through in. I'm from a small town in GA so I can say this. All my neighbors have the 10 Commandments posted on a sign in their front yards. :rotfl:

I think throwing in sunscreen and bug repellent is good for a laugh (and necessary!).

Thanks for the tip! I bought some Taylor ham to put in the basket I made for my friend. Everyone thought that was great!! :)
