We were thinking that this year we want to laugh at ourselves a little and send a funny picture in our Christmas cards. Rather then having a classic family photo, or a "we just happen to be walking hand in hand through a vineyard" picture we want to do a retro 70's or 80's awkward photo or something like that. Any ideas? We've thought of sticking our heads on top of skeleton's and making some related joke about living here in the desert. We just want something fresh and lighthearted and not some photo that portrays us as the perfect famiy. I'd love to hear any suggestions. :)

There is a book out that is exclusively awkward family photos. One day I stood in the bookstore and looked through the book and laughed out loud! I forget the name but it would probably be easy to find. That might give you some ideas.

Personally I wouldn't want to receive a skeleton picture in my Christmas card. But a funny/lighthearted one would be ok.

I love the idea! A 70's or 80's pic sounds fun. I have taken or seen taken by some of my other photog friends, many lighthearted poses. I've taken pics of mom and dad kissing with their hands over the kids eyes or a different take on that, mom and dad kissing with older children making gagging faces and covering younger ones eyes. How about kids pushing mom and dad on the swings, everyone playing in a pile of leaves, family lying on the ground with leaves sprinkled over them, family in a huddle with photog taking the pic by lying down looking up at them. I could see setting a family up traditionally with everyone smiling and acting serious and dad or older kids standing in the back with some sort of silly sign. Dad with a sign that has an arrow pointing at mom sitting in front of him and says something like "She thinks I'm smiling" comes to mind. Or older kids trying to "sneak" a text or a phone call on a cell in. I've done one with mom and dad holding hands and one kid on either side pulling trying to pull them over. That's all I can think of now. I'll keep thinking.

I don't know if it was supposed to be funny or not but I saw a Christmas card a couple of yers back where the family was all dressed up, but the dad was in a full on bicycle racing outfit with the bike. One of the kids was sitting on a giraffe I think. There were a couple other random things in th ere too, but they were all posed, looking at the camera. Very odd and funny.

I have a friend who host an annual "Ugly Sweater Christmas Party" Everyone has to wear their most outragous sweater...you can do something like that for the picture! Maybe a funny caption to go with it?

My girlfriend is a photographer, and my fave fun shot was a 50s type kitchen scene. Mom in green dress and pearls, with an apron, dad in a collared shirt and "Mr. Rogers" red cardigan, hair very 50s. I can link you to the pic - I don't want to post it, as it not mine and I don't know the subject.

Just wanted to say this is a great idea. My favorite family pic I've ever gotten was a relative we don't see other than Christmas. They were all sitting by the fireplace nicely but dad has the boy hanging upside down over him. I think it may have been a case of "can't get him to cooperate" but it's my all time favorite. I have it hanging up all year round. :thumbsup2

I think it's be funny-as long as you could tell it was lighthearted. I wouldn't want to confuse people-or have people think too hard about my Holiday photo.

If you live in the desert maybe you can 'make' snowballs or somethinglike that and take pics of you all having a snowball fight in the desert?

I take our family photo at home (just the kids) and I took them outside the other day. I had planned to have them posed all cute laying on the ground resting their chin on their hands or something like that. As soon as we got outside my 7 year old said "oh, I have to go to the bathroom, I'll be right back" and ran back in. So I told the older kids to start laying down for me and they started messing around. This is what we ended up with:

We all actually liked it better than if they had "posed", except for the little one on the bottom, he had actually laid down the way I told him to :rotfl:.

my DS's first Christmas we were still struggling with his colic. For our card that year I got us all matching PJs and Christmas sheets for out bed. I planned the shoot during DS's typical crying time. We all laid in the bed; DH and I pretended to be asleep. DS was wailing! One the inside we put, "All Momma and Daddy want for Christmas is a silent night!" Everyone LOVED it!

I just saw a hilarious Christmas card photo on FB that had the whole family set up nicely in front of a Christmas tree except you didn't see any faces just the tops of their heads. They all had their heads down texting. It was great.

This is alot of fun! I do this with my kids. Last year I had my 7 yr old daughter lay down on the couch covered in a Xmas throw and she pretended to sleep. Meanwhile my 10 yr old stood infront of the tree with a Santa hat on and he had a present in his hand. He made it look like he was putting the present under the tree and he was looking at the camerea with his finger in front of his lips to shush us.

We do this every year. We've done milk mustaches by the fireplace eating santas milk and cookies, kids in the jacuzzi with bubble beards and Santa hats, everybody piled on top of dad in a crazy pose. This year I think we're going to do a "jingle cow" photo but I've still trying to figure out the details on that one. (We live on a dairy farm).

We have a friend who is absolutely nuts (and I say that with love) and every year he sends out completely hysterical cards, so I have to share one...

This is not family friendly by any means, but a few years ago his Christmas card was a photo of him and his wife stringing up Christmas lights on their garage. They both had their backs to the camera and she was handing him the lights while he was up on the ladder...the only thing was, he was completely BUTT NAKED! This photo was taken in broad daylight. Some may have thought it in poor taste but I haven't laughed that hard in a long time, or since!

I think I got that card last year! :rotfl: My neighbors sent one with mom and dad both on laptops and teen girls both texting. I wish I could remember the caption, because that made it even funnier. Super cute!
