I've always liked animal names that say something about the animal -- or that are accidental.
My BIL is the king of accidental names. My sister has a habit of bringing home strays, and while he always gripes about it, he actually likes animals and never makes her get rid of them. Many of the names he has given various animals over the years are unprintable, I'm afraid. I will tell you that they once had a female coonhound named Butch -- her original appelation was a simple noun, but the kids were repeating it, so Butch she became. They also at one point had a horse named Demmit.
I had a friend in college who had a dog named Cat. I liked the irony, so I later named a cat Mouse. The same friend also had a calico cat that was mostly white with a large splotch on her side that was shaped like a pair of lips -- he named her Lydia (as in, "the tattooed lady.)
A friend of the family had a black cat with four white paws; he was named Burlington, after the sock mfr.
