Can anyone tell me what a basic funeral (cremation) might cost??

Not trying to be morbid...my dad is having some health problems and it's a very real thing for me to consider right now.

Thanks.

First of all, I am so sorry to hear about your father. Any funeral home will discuss your options and the costs, and I think you'll find they won't pressure you(hope so anyway). There are some "discount casket" types of places that can save you quite a bit of money. Around here I think you would be looking at $800-$1200 just for the cremation procedure. The urn and any type of plaque with engraving is additional. I hope things work out for you.

Sorry to hear... :grouphug:

My Dad was cremated 5 yrs ago... I'm pretty sure it was around $500-$600 .. Mom didn't buy an urn because his ashes were being put in a memorial wall at our church, but even the 'box' they provided was another $100 or so! Some of those urns can get pretty pricey!!!

You will see a difference in funeral prices depending on your location. When we had to bury my brother in California we were shocked at the cost of everything! Things are much cheaper, by comparison, here in the East Coast.

:grouphug: Aurora63, sorry to hear about your Dad. I would ballpark $1000 - $2000, depending on where you live. I'm sending you a PM with additional info regarding detailed expenses based on my parent's funeral last November.

My father saved a bit of money by going directly to the "cremation place" (what is THAT place called?) instead of going through the funeral home when his last wife died. The funeral home charged about 3 times as much. Best of luck to you and big hugs!

It varies by state because of state rules and regulations. And when we did the research a bit ago for our folks, we found it was less expensive to bury someone in California than in Connecticut.

A lot of funeral homes have cost calculators on their web sites. You should start there first. And keep in mind that, like lots of other things, you can now get caskets at outlets and save a lot of money.

Sorry to hear about your dad. :grouphug:

I paid $3000 for my son in '03 and $6000 for my daughter in 4/06. I am making payments on both. the cemetary on the other hand wanted all their money upfront. I knew about my son's condition for about 15 months and bought 2 plats for him and ME. then my dd died unexpectedly and she's in my plot. i bought 2 more. Shop around and the funeral directors are usually very helpful. do it now!!! You won't want to do it later.

Here in AL, approx $3k for a straight cremation then memorial service. If you want a viewing the body would have to be embalmed which would cost more.

For my dad, we had a cremation; no funeral, no embalming. It cost about $3,000, including the urns. I think the urns (my mother bought hers at the same time) were about $500 each. So $2,00 for the "coffin" and cremation. I'll warn you that the basic cremation coffin is VERY basic; think particle board, with that sawdust smell.
There is a monastary that makes lovely wooden ones for around $750; they would be suitable for a funeral, also. I will order one when DM gets worse. The coffin store had one that wasn't nearly as nice (but nicer than the funeral home basic) for twice as much.

Please note (at least in FL) that the funeral home will not let anyone other than immediate family view the body if there is no embalming. It cost $150 to transport my father from the "cooler" to the funeral home so we could say good-bye.

My parents are tithing members of a church, so there was no cost for the memorial service, other than flowers and organist (honorarium). I also gave the minister an honorarium.

My family has a large cemetary plot, so it only cost $200 to open the grave for the urn. Old friends of my parents arranged for a minister from their childhood/early marriage church to come and say a few words.

We rented a casket when my Mom died 5 yrs ago. In the rented casket was a card board box that we had her creamented in. The total cost for this and it only being a 1 day service, Wake and funeral in same day was $4800. My Mom would have been very proud we spent so little. She did not even want that much but we needed it for us.

We paid about 7000.00 3 years ago to have my mother cremated. The cost also included flowers, tree, headstone, "spot" and a marble seat.
