whaddaya got?

I'm leaving KCMO Saturday morning (8/19-8/20) for a last minute "this is your last weekend before you go back to college" trip from my sweetie. :lovestruc We plan to go to the zoo early Sunday monring and then drive home. But we'll have all day and night Saturday to bash around. I've never been, so I'm looking for suggestions. The more "off the beaten path" the better.

The Old Market area is great for shopping and dining. If you're 21 or older, the riverboat casinos in Council Bluffs are fun as well.

I realize that neither suggestion is off the beaten path, but both are enjoyable. I don't get back there very often, so I'm a little rusty with the ideas.

Another good option that IS a little more off the beaten path is Mahoney State Park, which sits between Omaha and Lincoln. There are all sorts of activities there. Check it out at: http://www.lasr.net/pages/park.php?Park_ID=NE03sp002

Have a good time!!

You could go to the Old Market. It's shops and restaurants in what was the warehouse district many, many years ago. There are brick streets and wonderful old buildings. Take a look at oldmarket.com. Have a great time in Omaha!

I liked walking through the River/Park area...Gene Leahy Mall??? I dunno, but it's really nicely landscaped and would be fun to get something to go from a restaurant and eat in the park.

Are you looking for things just downtown? Dont forget that Gerald Ford was born in Omaha, you can visit his birthsite. If cemeteries interest you, visit the Mormon one.

The Mormon cemetry also has a good musuem and it is free. They are in the northern part of Omaha called Florence. There is also the Western Heritage and Joslyn Art Museum which are in or near downtown. You can also tour Girls and Boys Town but that isn't downtown. As others have said the Old Market is good. The zoo will take a long time if not a whole day to get through.
