Fun fair comes to town

The annual fun fair comes to town tomorrow and Tuesday. Don't know if to let the boys know, I just can't face going tomorrow. Most of the town turns out and it is a shoulder to shoulder squeeze and causes a serious dent in our finances. Glen may go down with his friends and I may consider taking Ashley on Tuesday. Feel really guilty but have taken them every year since they were babies and just don't feel I want to this year. Am I getting old and stuck in my ways?

Now that we regularly go to Disney I never take the kids to the local fun fair. It's always crowded, expensive and never a patch on what they are used to. It doesn't sound like they would be missing too much if you didn't tell them - the only thing thought is would they hear about if from their friends and want to go.

Glad I'm not the only one that sounds like the Grinch.
DP also doesn't like travelling fairs as someone died at one when she was a youngster.

Er ... no! These travelling fairs are, IMO, expensive, poorly maintained and would you really trust your (or your childrens) safety to a "youf" with about as much experience of how the ride works as I do about fly-fishing on the moon? The rides at these things cost a small fortune at £2/£4 a go and the cost with even one child would soon mount up. As for all the gambling cons (coconut shy / darts etc), the less said the better.

If they want to go to a fair, save your money and visit Drayton Manor or Alton Towers for a family safe day out.

Yes same here, since visiting Disney our local fairs have never been the same! Plus the fact that its always the unemployed local youths who help to build the rides!! Ours was here last week and we gave it a miss, but I did hear that the bigger rides had a credit card swipe machine!!!

Progress???

i have to agree they are VERY expensive these days :sad2: we usully set the kids a spending limit :) it makes them very choosy as to what rides they go on

We used to go to local events when we were younger; ages later we decide to try again and everyone's given up. The village used to love local events, but now they just don't care.. :sad2:

Thank you for reassuring me its not me being mean and grumpy. I will nip down just after lunch when it opens and there is only pre schoolers about and buy the boys some goodies. Candy floss, toffee apple etc. of course I won't indulge myself :rotfl2:

I used to love going to the local annual fair when I was younger. In those days the only rides were the Walzers, Speedway and Bumper Cars :)
I remember moaning that the rides had gone up to 20p!

It was great sitting on the bikes in the Speedway ride trying to look cool and not holding onto the handlebars LOL (only wimps held the handlebars!).

The ones that come round now seem to have more exotic and intense type rides - not sure I would trust their maintenance or safety standards!
They are a bit on the expensive side now as well!

we have the fair in our city 3 times a year one has only just left.
most of my friends including myself take our kids to a theme park as the fair's are normally quite expensive and a theme park is more economical the kids agree and normally prefer to go to the theme park but maybe that's because we have a theme park approx 40 minutes away from us.
it works for us anyway

I hate the travelling fair, as previous posters have said I have my doubts about how safe they are and as for the phenomenal cost involved in an evening there. We've managed to give it a miss both times this year.
