I'm putting together fun little quizzes that we do at the dinner table for each night the cruise. Our first night is a Disney Cruise Line trivia game. I thought this would be a great place to get some interesting trivia that I won't get by just googling.

We are traveling on the Magic and will now have been on all four, so triva about any are good.

As an example, "Who is the Godmother of the Disney Magic?" Patty Disney.

Any trivia you may have I will welcome! Thanks!!

Why will the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy never be able to do both East and West coast Cruises?
The Disney Dream and Fantasy are too big to go through the Panama Canal

What song does the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder's ship horn play?
When You Wish Upon a Star

In addition to When You Wish Upon a Star , what songs do the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy Ship horns play?
A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
Be Our Guest
Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)
Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (An Actor’s Life for Me)
It’s a Small World”.

Q: How do you get to Outlook on the Dream or Fantasy?

A: Outlook is in the fake funnel, on Deck 14, above the Edge tween club. As far as I know, you can't take the stairs up there (the stairs on Deck 12 midship are labeled for Edge), and there is only 1 midship elevator that goes there. If you are lucky to get into the midship elevator that goes up to Deck 14, then push the button for 14. If you don't get that one, then go up to 11 or 12 (whichever the highest deck the elevator you get goes up to) and try again. Once you get up to Deck 14, you have to go through a door that appears to be an emergency exit, but it really the entrance to Outlook.

I actually have a trivia question that I don't know the answer to. In the aft elevator lobby, there is one elevator that goes up to Deck 13; the others only go up to Deck 12. I was never in that elevator going up. But if you push 13, where does it take you to? The Goofy Sports Deck doesn't show an elevator going up there. I was only up there once, when I was exploring the ship, and I don't recall an elevator going up there. So, where does that elevator go to? Or, does it go up to the Goofy Sports Deck and just isn't shown on the deck plan for some reason?

You want to attend the "art of the theme show" tour the next time you are on the boat.

...

This is true for now, but "never" may be too strong a word. I understand there is a Panama Canal expansion going on that will allow larger ships to pass, I believe starting in 2016. How much larger I don't know...

Q: When constructed, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are almost identical. However, there was a major difference in how they were built that makes them quite different vessels. What is it?

A: The Disney Magic was constructed in two separate sections at two different shipyards. One section was towed to the other, then welded together, so there is a seam holding them together. This was not done with the Wonder, which is in one "piece". (Although, I have read that Disney put a fake seam on the Wonder so it could still be the "twin" of the Magic)

I've heard that too. Does the Magic being constructed in 2 separate sections vs. the Wonder as one cause any differences in the handling of the ships?

Yes, the Wonder ship tour pointed out the fake seam weld.

One other shocking detail was the number of unique carpet pieces to help with passenger navigation.

They also discussed the ship colors on how they originated.

The unique lifeboat colors and design.

I strongly encourage cruisers to check out the "art of the theme show" tour when aboard.

The new PanamaX class will allow ships like the Fantasy and Dream to cross the Panama Canal. However, I doubt that Disney would pull them for Alaska duty. Magic will likely make the trip in 2016 once the canal is complete, forcing the Wonder to Europe and to be refitted as the Magic was. Disney has agreement with Port Canaveral until like 2022, so expect at a minimum one of the larger ships to sail from there.

Nope no difference at all. Realistically when they build a ship they build it in blocks. So the make a section say 100 feet wide by 20 feet long and say 3 decks high. They run all of the wiring etc and put in what they can. (Size is generally determined by the weight of the block and crane capacity A cabin section would probably be bigger overall then say a kitchen block that has all of the stoves etc in it. )The crane picks up the section puts it in place and it gets welded together. In the Magics case 1 block was about 300 feet long and the other 600 feet long. From talking to one of the tour guides on the Magic in 2010 right after the Magic finally debuted there were some Fincantieri designers onboard. They told the cew that if the Magic was to ever develop a stress crack it would be any where but the seam. The seam is the strongest part of that ship.

The Wonder having a fake seam is true. When we were on the Magic in 2010 I asked about the seam. One of the tour guides met me at the seam and explained it to me. If you go out on the Magic or the Wonder to life boat 10 you can see it. Basically when the build plan for the Magic was developed the yard didn't have the physical space for the Magic in it's entirety. So they came up with the plan to build the ship in Margera and Monfalcone. Otherwise it probably would have cost Fincantieri the bid. The Wonder as built is an almost twin to the Magic. Right down to the seam. There's s few minor differences like in the Dream class. Besides the rest having a different name as built, there a few minor differences. Look at the navigator verandah portholes. Magics are round Wonders are oval.

The Wonders Godmother is Tinkerbell. The other ships are actual people.

Or do what the other cruise lines do, do a cruise around Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. My mom did that on NCL and said it was the most remarkable cruise she had ever taken. She started in Miami and ended in San Diego, where it was summer, and of course it was winter in the southern hemisphere, so she went from heat to mild, to cool, to glaciers and snow , to cool to mild to hot weather in 21 days.
