Cast- Me 37 yr old Mom lover of all rides and themeparks and a total DISNEY nut that decided to skip Disney and go to the Darkside
DH- 35yr old .Not a big fan of Disney or Themeparks in general but likes to make me happy .Big critic on hotels, Customer service and food
DD 8yrs old, loves Disney, themeparks and rides but very short and not very adventurous

Sunday, 1/22- Departed Harrisburg PA on Airtran.Sad to learn that Airtran is being completely removed in August so NO more cheap or direct flights.:sad2:We departed 15 mins ahead of time and arrived in Florida at 3pm( 20 mins early). Our Tiffany Driver ( Sam- we have had him 2x before and he remembered us)met us in baggage claim.Nice ,efficient and FAST Got our bags and we were OFF to Portofino Bay Hotel.
The Hotel was ABSoLUTELY breathtaking as you come up the driveway. We were in awe.Check in ran smoothly.I had requested a NON pet room.We booked Club level deluxe queen. The room they had blocked for us was not ready, but they were able to give us a room that was.Room 2567 in the Villas section. Our view was of the Main pool ( beach pool) and the themeparks in the distance. We could see Rip Ride Rockitt running and MIB towers. The room was VERY clean and looked recently re-done.Bathroom was nice as well.If there was a complaint, the only thing I could say was very little drawer space( truthfully none other than the nightstand) and the closet did not have enough hangers for 3 people( not enough for 1 person really) but we generally live out of suitcases anyhow. We went down to see the Club offerings for that evening hour. They had assorted soft drinks, coffee, water, citrus water and assorted Wines and Beers. The hot dish was orange chicken with rice and a side salad. There were also breads ,cheeses/crackers ,veggies and dips.It was yummy. But I was on a mission to eat at SAls..Sals was absolutely DELICIOUS..I had a meatball sandwich and DD had pizza( we shared) .DH ate in the room since the Giants were playing. After dinner DD and I walked the walking path to Citywalk. It was well lit and took about 15mins, and we were leisurely strolling.Next up Day 1- Islands of Adventure

Day 1- Islands of Adventure
We were up early, early ,early to get to IOA for early entry. We ate breakfast at 7a in the CLUB lounge..Lots of sweet pastries, Bagels/breads with butter,Cream Cheese and PB and Jellys.Assorted Cereals, OAtmeal with fixins, Yogurt with fixins, fresh fruit ,hard boiled eggs and coffee, teas, juices and milk.Once done we were down to the boat dock.A boat was just pulling away so we walked.Got to the IOA turnstyles at about 730am.At 745am they let everyone in and we all HUFFED it back to WWohp.THANK GOD for all the posts on how to get to WWoHP fast.Because I somehow ended up the leader and everyone was following me.It was actually very organized and very pleasant..NONE of the Disney madness with rope drop.We got to Ollivanders with one family ahead of us.Their son got picked .All in all a cute show, but NO WAY IN HELL would I wait for it again.Even my 8 yr old said it was cute, but nothing special.Next over to FJ.We decided to do a child swap since DD didn't want to ride.CHILD swap is one area where Universal beats the pants off Disney. There i s an actual room with videos playing to wait in.Dh rode first and said it was great but he expected more( he is hard to impress).I got in line to ride and.....TECHINICAL DIFFICULTIES..of course this happens to me often, but luckily it resolved quickly and I was on my way .I loved it , but I have to agree with DH..It was great, fantastic,,but I was expecting more. After this we both were able to ride again and then do the castle tour.By this time it was 845am.Headed over to Flight of the Hippogrif.Cute but quick.I then decided to ride Dragon Challenge (I am a coaster junkie and my Dh is not ).It was ok, but rough and I think I jarred something loose in my skull. At this time it was 9am and the masses would be coming.Bought myself a Frozen Butterbeer and sat and shared with Dh and DD.Then I visited moaning Myrtle in the bathroom.WE made our way out of WWohp since it was busy and headed to Marvel..At this point we noticed something..TOUR GROUPS EVERYWHERE..There were so many that I am stunned there were any people left in Brazil. This would continue all week too.We tried Spiderman, only to be told that nothing in MArvel was working at the moment due to "techinical issues".They resolved quickly and we were off on Spiderman..WE LOVED IT..actually a little bit more than FJ.We rode a few more times and then I went to ride HULK..HULK is the only place I had issue with the previously mentioned tour groups. The leader asked the couple behind me and in front of me if he could get through to meet his party. They said yes, and he went...unfortunately 5o of his closest party friends ALSO tried to cut the line. This is where I put my foot down and said "Nope, not gonna happen"I really didn't need to say much more since others in line did the same and a TM was ALL over them in about 30 seconds pulling them off the line and making them go to the back.HULK was great but again My head hurt badly after.I have a history of head injuries so I think my coaster days are sadly almost done.We finishe Marvel ( except Dr Doom..I like my feet on the ground )and headed to Seussland and did all the rides there. We walked thru JP, but honestly with the River ride down not much to do.DD Played in the playground and did the discovery center. She liked both.At this point we went over to Lost Continent and DID Posiedens Fury...WHAT A COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME THIS WAS..Really ...the most impressive thing was the outside. It is a shame since it truly is a magnificent building.WE saw the Sindbad stunt show ,which my 8 yr old LOVED

Looking forward to more. We are going in August with our 8 year old DS. He is a bit more adventurous than your DD, but not by much. He will do RC's, but only if they don't go upside down.

How do you get the Pottersville fast? Is it through Suess land? Just wondered....you said you were glad you learned how to get there fast and I would like to know if there is a better way. Your trip sounds great so far...thanks for sharing. The large tour groups sound awful.

Day 1 (cont'd)After Sindbad we made our way over to Mythos for our dining ressies though they were for 430pm and it was only 3pm.We had a great meal and then we went back to WwoHP to see the Tri-wizard show. After that we made our way out of the park and back to PBH and went swimming( the weather all week was Low-mid 80's and beautiful). After a swim we changed and went to the lounge for wine, beer ,food and to do DD's Homework. The Club employees were ALL extremely friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make our trip wonderful.Tonights entree was a sausage and veggie medly over orzo..quite tasty. After drinks and food we headed over to Citywalk just to check it out and then to bed pretty early.Next up the studios
Day2- Universal Studios
Up super early again, though we didn't need to be .So we leisurely got ready and made our way to the lounge for breakfast. This time we took the boat to the studios and were there about 830am for a 9am opening.Apparently plenty of people still confuse the 2 parks because they had someone working the crowd telling them that if they were there for early entry or Harry Potter they were in the wrong park.Once the park opened we headed straight to Shrek.I considered Rip Ride Rockit, but with my head still bothering me and some minor ear issues I skipped it.Shrek was cute, but since we had the 3d movie at home it was nothing we hdn't seen.LOVED the Dungeon pre-show area.But..people really need to shut the heck up and listen. When they say NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY it means just that. The poor Tm spent 5 mins yelling at the person who thought the rules applied to everyone BUT them and we missed a good portion of the preshow dialogue. In any event, we moved to Twister (kind of scared me since I have been thru both an F1 and an F3 tornado). We moved from there to Mummy...THIS hands down was our favorite ride in the studios. We rode 4 times using child swap and no lines. It was great. From Mummy we moved over to the Horror Show.I was really really disappointed in this one.The actor was great, but he showed one movie trick with a knife and then it was all video on how they made the recent Wolfman movie. That was it.I heard other people saying the same things as we walked out.The TM in the lobby did get me with the fake arm even though I was looking for it which was cute.I won't do this one again though. After this it was lunch at Lombards Landing. It was ok, nothing fantastic.Disaster was next on our list.My 8 yr old loved this, and it was entertaining .But way too long.We made our way through Amity( whats left of it ).The walls up everywhere made me so sad.I have no idea what they are doing with it officially, but you could hear them working behind the walls.I had my picture taken with Bruce the shark and put on my saddest face..We rode MIB next.Again cute, but with a HUGE tour group in the standby line we skipped the regular line and went thru express pass.Simpsons was fun, not sure what the delay was .But there was 0 mins wait and we waited about 20 on the express line with no people on lines at all.I got really nauseous n the front seat and my head hurt.Dh wanted to ride again, but I sat it out. After this we rode ET and let DD play in Fievel for a few mins. Then it was over to Beetlejuice, which turned out to be my absolute FAVORITE show.We all loved it so much we saw it 2x.Terminator was our last thing for today and it was cool, but dated and needs to be re-done.I walked thru Lucy tribute and stunned my DH by getting all the Lucy trivia right.Big Lucy buff here.We left and went back to the PBH and swam and then hit the lounge for our evening routine of wine/beer,homework and food.Tonights entree was Flank steak, sweet potato w/honey and garlic and salad.Yummy .We were finding that the club offerings were enough for meals for the evening, and with our early lunch/dinner times it worked well.We played some bocce on the bocce court and then hit the beds pretty early.

Once you get into the park go to the lagoon, make a right into Seussland.Once in Seussland look for the path to the left that follows the lagoons edge.IF you go to far you will come to the Cat in the Hat ride and go in a circle.Once through, go over the bridge into the Lost Continent .Make a left follow the Lost Continent to the back. You will see a bridge on your left by the Fire Eaters Grill.DO NOT GO OVER THIS BRIDGE,,It goes to Jurassic Park.If you keep going back you come to Hogsmeade.

Thanks! I wish I had a map! Not sure I did exactly this last time we were there. I know we went through Suess....but I think we went by Mythos and Poseiden etc.

Day 3 - Our 2nd Day at IOA
Up bright and early and down to the lounge for breakfast. We missed the boat again so we decided to use the shortcut that was posted here on the boards that has you cut thru the Hard Rock self parking lot..It really is a time saver and shaves several mins off the walk, not very scenic since it goes in the receiving bay and employee areas, but definitely faster. We got to the gates again by 730am.We met a really nice guy and his teen daughter on the lines and it was their 1st day so they asked me to show them where WWoHP was.DId have a laugh because there was this woman on an ECV who had the right idea..Get thru the gates safely and then FLOOR IT..I wish I could have tied a rope around her cart and rode with her.It was funny.Made our way back to WWoHP and skipped Ollivanders this time and rode FJ 4 times no waits.DD still was afraid even though we told her it was like Spiderman and she loved that ride.I could have done it again but DH was starting to feel ill from all the motion, and I wasn't feeling so great either. We went to Honeydukes and bought some treats and gifts and had them sent back to the hotel. We visited moaning Myrtle in the bathrooms again and then made our way to Marvel..The floodgates had once again opened up and it was a SEA of South American tour groups..Everywhere I looked it was flags and groups. We used express pass on Spiderman and here is where I saw my first and only unplesant TM.. I happen to agree with him, but it was not fun for us to watch..He was attempting to load cars on the ride. Each row seats 4.My family as in a line row and he was calling for 4 people off the standby line to fill the car..Of course none of them were paying attention since they were busy chanting/yelling in Portuguese. So the Tm managed to get 2 loaded and yelled for 2 more..None of them were listening just horsing around. The Tm lost it and told them to "SHUT UP and listen or NONE of them would ride".He needed 2 more.At this point our vehicle was delayed and holding up the ride, so he went to dispatch us and deal with the SB line.It was then that the 2 that he already got in my car decided, they were going to try and climb out to ride with their friends. This ended with the TM pulling them off the ride and going nuts.Didn't get to see the end of it because he dispatched our car.I will say we rode a few times after that and the huge group was gone when we came back around the 2nd time and so was the TM..Not sure what happened.Spiderman was great but some of the sounds and images were not working properly.Good thing it is getting rehabbed. After Spidey, we went back to Seuss, rode all the rides again..That one fish two fish ride has a rreally catchy song and you can get reall really wet. I got my picture on Hortons Egg .DD played in the If I ran the zoo playground for a little too.We skipped JP today since there was nothing really there to do.DD wanted to see the Sindbad show again and we had time to kill so we went back to WWoHP for Butterbeer and made our way over to the mystical fountain to watch.Went over to Toon lagoon and wanted to ride Dudley do right, but it was having "technical issues" and was not running .Popeyes looked fun, and we tried that, but again "techinical issues".Went over to Sindbad and watched the show again.Tried Toon lagoon again, but decided we had a dining ressie soon and didn't want to get wet.We settled for going up onto ME ship the Olive and water gunning the unsuspecting riders on popeye..It was so much fun..Maybe mean, but fun nonetheless..After this we were literally hot and tired. We bagged our planned dining at pastamore and just went to Hard Rock.Back to the resort for some more swimming and hanging in the lounge for our nightly ritual.Tonights hot choice was Paella and salad.I couldn't eat the Paella since I am allergic to Shellfish and we weren't really all that hungry anyhow.Dh said it was great though. After our dessert at 8pm we went up to the room to watch some tv and decide whether to do Seaworld or another day at Universal..Since we missed some stuff at Unviersal and wanted to re-do other things we decided to bag Seaworld this trip. But will do it next time.

Thanks! I wish I had a map! Not sure I did exactly this last time we were there. I know we went through Suess....but I think we went by Mythos and Poseiden etc.
You do pass Mythos and Poseiden once you are in the Lost Continent section of the park.So you remember correctly.Truthfully there really is only one way to go to WWoHP since they block off the area by Marvel which is the other way in

well that was a big disappointment at Horror Make Up Show.
there is a lot more to that show than what you saw.

i have no idea what happened to the rest of it.

it really is a hoot.

try it again on another trip to see the whole show.

Sunday, 1/22-
The Hotel was ABSoLUTELY breathtaking as you come up the driveway. We were in awe.Check in ran smoothly..We the closet did not have enough hangers for 3 people( not enough for 1 person really) but we generally live out of suitcases anyhow.

the great thing about about staying at the Loews hotels is the Star Service.
you could have pushed that button on the phone in your room and requested more hangers.

they even will bring you a toothbrush or anything you forgot by calling them.

no charge for any of that.

i'm enjoying your trippie.
i love how you put all the details into it.

it really brings it all to life for the readers!

Day 4- 2nd day at Universal Studios
Got up early again.I can't seem to get up this early at home though..LOL..Got ready and went to the lounge again for breakfast.Made it down to the dock and got on the boat this time.Got to the gates of the studios about 830am.Met the nice guy and his daughter from the day before and passed the time talking about where we were from and whether they enjoyed HP ( they loved it too). Before we knew it , it was rope drop.We went to Twister again since we all wanted to do it again. From there moved to The Mummy and rode that multiple times. I was completely BY myself on my car and it was a tad spooky. After we had our fill on that we headed over Disaster but decided not to do it again.Instead we rode MIB 2x with no wait and then Dh rode the Simpsons again.I sat this one out with DD .After it was time to see the Blues Brothers.Loved it, but I loved the movie so its no suprise.DD loved it too. After BB show we were hungry, Of course I have a picky DD so we had to find some place with Chicken fingers.I read the reviews and knew it was bad, but we ate at MELS..It was NOT good. Not horribly bad, but not good.We did walk thru Monsters Cafe and look at the decor.I wanted Louies but since we were eating at Mama Dellas that night I didn't want Italian all day.During lunch we saw Marilyn Monroe walk past,I wanted to see Lucy though. After lunch I went to the bathroom and of course it was then that Lucy came out and I missed her..I was bummed.I did get to see Spongebob( mine and DD;s favorite and Scooby).I wanted to meet the Simpsons, but not with the HUGE ,unorganized ,chaotic tour groups all around them.We slowly made our way back to Beetlejuice again for another GREAT show..Seriously I could watch it all day long.We rode ET again, and decided we were done and skipped the Animal show.Took the shortcut back to the hotel since the boat was just pulling out.We beat the boat back by about 2 mins.Sometimes it really is faster to walk unless you are exhausted.I will say the Pedi cabs need to be more cautious .They fly down that pathway with no regard to who is walking.I watched a poor elderly gent almost get knocked over.Went back to the pool, sipped citrus water and relaxed. We had a pre-dinner snack at the lounge with our nightly wine and beer.Tonights hot entree was Spaghetti and Meatballs. We all skipped since we were going to Mama Dellas.Dinner at Mama Dellas was FABULOUS .The food was great and I know good Italian food since both Dh and I are Italian and come from families of great Italian food.We also both grew up in Ny and NJ..So we know good Italian. It was after dinner that DD decided she wanted a stuffed ET doll.Of course the Universal store at the hotel was now closed. So I decided to go to Citywalk while Dh and Dd watched the opera singers at the hotel.I did catch most of it while waiting on the boat dock for the boat. While waiting I got misty eyed and sad since my vacation was over and I was leaving in the morning.I manged to get the Et and then leisurely walk the path along the water back by myself taking in all the sights and sounds and saying goodbye..I did breakdown and cry this time..Surprising since I never cry at leaving Disney..

Last day- Got up early for our flight home,it was raining but it didn't make it any easier to go.Went down to the lounge for our final breakfast and then checked out.Tiffany towncar was waiting out front and got us to the airport where we waited on the longest line we had all week..30 mins to get thru security..LOL.Back home to the cold and wind and depressed..:sad2: already begging Dh to go back.We are due for Disney again, but it was unanimous that we may visit Mk and Epcot and stay at Universal again. We loved it that much, and for Dh to love it ,they must be doing something right.
Random thoughts and some final stuff--
1-EACH and every employee was smiling, helpful and friendly.Disney DOES NOT own the market on great employees. From the gates to the rides to the bathrooms( which by the way were very very clean). The parks were clean and other then the techinical issues, can't complain about any of it..Excellent service.
2-CLub lounge was great for my family because we used it each and every day..multiple times per day.It might not be a great value for all.I will say that PBH is well aware of the issue of non-club people sneaking in and they were on top of montoring the door at all times. For those of you that don't know, PBH does not have a specific Club designated floor,The club is on the 3rd floor, main level off the lobby and readily visible .There may have been issues before but none while I was there and the club lounge was empty alot of the time. All the club employees addressed us by name, by day 2 knew our routines and went out of their way to help us with anything we needed or wanted.
3-Jan is slow but it is tour groups from hell month,I may not visit Disney again in Jan(been there done that), but I will go to Unviersal. I will say I was really super impressed with how Universal handled them vs. how disney does.Disney doesn't want to rock the boat for anyone and doesn't always stop some of the badder behavior.Universal employees were on top of it .I will say if the tour groups weren't there , the parks would have been EMPTY.Completely empty.
4-Child swap is super easy to use and better than Disney in this respect.I found at Disney half the time the Cms had no idea how to do this.
5-Don't compare Disney to Universal( I know I did in the prior points). They are NOT the same, they are both unique and have plenty to offer if you let it..I love them both but for different reasons.Universal is a great experience if you are willing to let go of Disney for 5 mins and LET IT BE on its own.
6-I am not sure what can be done about this, but people still get confused as to where WWoHP is ..I heard a very upset couple on my last day..They were in the studios looking for Harry Potter, only to be told they were in the wrong park.Which did upset them greatly since they only got a 1 park/1 day ticket
Know where you are going folks. It is an expensive lesson to learn
7- We had plenty of time to leisurely take it all in thanks to the resort guest Express pass.I did hear a few snide comments from people in Standby as we went by but that is to be expected. No one likes to wait.I will say Without it I think the tour groups would have been alot harder to deal with.We enjoyed just listening and sitting around.Heard some funny stuff just sitting people watching.also got approached to do a survey on what we thought of a Harry Potter expansion or an addition of Lord of the Rings or Transformers to the parks. So something big is on the horizon.
8-Not having to book dining 6 months in advance was a HUGE plus.We ate when and where we wanted with little to no waits.May not be true in busier seasons.
9-I did visit RPR and Hard rock to look around. They are both beautiiful hotels and I would stay at any of them..But PBH took my breath away.
10- According to my 8 yr old-She had an AWESOME time. She didn't ride alot of the more thrilling rides, but never complained about waiting for me and Dh since the child swap areas had movies on etc. When we asked her wher e to next trip, Dh and I were both shocked to hear she wanted to come back to Universal.
All in all a great trip,I was overly prepared for it thanks to all here on the boards. There is alot more details I could have shared I am sure .But I am forgetting right now.Any questions feel free to ask:goodvibes

I am thinking something was not right at the horror show either since everyone raves about it ..including my DH who had been to the studios before and had seen it.He said alot was missing too.We didn't get around to seeing it the last day so will try it again next time. We did use Star service 2x.Once for more green tea Keuring pods an once for extra pillows. They were super fast and sccomodating.Idk why I didn't think to ask for more hangers.:confused3

Thanks for sharing and for the tips. I am looking more and more forward to our August trip the more I read from people!:thumbsup2

I enjoyed your report.

Our family went to US/IoA for the first time this summer. We stayed club level at PBH, too. You made much better use of it than we did. WWoHP opened at 7 am, so the two days we went early we were not able to have breakfast first. Sounds like they had some yummy nighttime offerings!

I'm sorry to hear you experienced so many technical issues with attractions and issues with the tour groups.

We ate at Lombards and Mythos as well, enjoyed both.

We didn't see the Horror Makeup show or Beetlejuice, which I regret, but my boys don't like to watch shows. :sad1: We missed Sinbad and Poeseiden, too.

So your daughter didn't have any issues with Mummy? I loved it, it was my favorite attraction, but DS10 only rode it once. We kept switching off to ride it with my older son.

I guess I should have been more clear.Dh and I rode mummy and switched off.DD didn't want to ride ,but she enjoyed hanging in the swap area watching everything and the Tms were entertaining her anyhow

Boy, now I have a lot to live up to with our trip report from last week...same days different hotel (Royal Pacific).

But I will shout a big Amen to the tour group issues. Crowds of relatively rude folks. Thank God for hotel Express Pass and early hours!

:thumbsup2 they were like swarms of locusts..Everywhere,extremely loud all the time..We learned just to go in the opposite direction, forget most character meet and greets since getting them to line up orderly was a joke..We were with Spongebob when the hordes spotted him and they were all over him instantly. The handler took Spongebob away pretty quickly..LOL.. I had worse experiences with them at Disney though. So I thought this trip was a easier to deal..Like I said Universal employees were on top of them when bad behavior started. But I am THANKFUL for the express pass and getting to the parks early.Dh kept saying and "Obama wants to make it easier for Brazil to visit? the WHOLE country is here now..Whats next?:worship:

Another TIP...We bought lanyard/zip pocuhes at walmart before our trip.It had a clear window for our room key and a zip pocket on the back.IT was PERFECT for holding our room key, money etc.The Express pass was able to be scanned right thru the plastic too. They costed about $3 and even my DH thought they were a great idea to go bag free
