Has anyone had any experience with Full Sail in Winter park florida? Thanks!

I'm also interested to know if anyone has any experience with Full Sail. My DS17 is planning on attending there - possibly next year.

Me too......specifically the Animation program. Does anyone know what it costs per credit hour? Is it like normal campus life if you arrange housing?

Pam

They are supposed to be sending us a catalog but we haven't received it yet, so I don't know how much it costs.

They did send the housing booklet. All the housing is off campus apartments - basically they send you a list of apartments in the area. I think you do get a small discount for being at Full Sail.

The lady we talked to when we called was really nice and helpful. She said that they attend classes 6 days a week, 8 - 10 hours a day, so they don't have time for much else, including a job (because it's a 4 year program that's done in 1 year and 9 months). They help you with finding and applying for financial aid. If you attend their open house tour (which they have once a month) and then enroll within 1 year you get a $200 reimbursement for travel expenses. She said that all the instructors are at the open house to answer questions, as well as people from financial aid, housing, and anything else you might need.

It sounds really great, and we're planning on going down there either this fall or next January.

I was hoping that there would be someone on here who's a student there who could fill us in on all the details!

We still haven't gotten our catalog yet, so we called and they're sending us another one.

My DS asked about the tuition (he will be doing film making, which is a BS degree and starting in the Fall of 2007) - Okay, get ready...

$65,000!

Actually it was $64 something, but I rounded up. That includes all books and materials (film, etc.) needed for classes, but not housing and living expenses. We figured it'll be at least $85,000. Whew! Can you say "student loan"? LOL My DH is still in shock!

If it is any consolation...that is really in the normal price range these days. However, being a "private" school you may get pretty good aid. If you go to Pixar's website, they have a section for students/recent grads and one of the ?'s is on what colleges do they hire from or suggest attending. I checked into ALL of them ( mostly CA and NY area) and anything under 80K would be a bargain! DD has agreed to look into a Graphics BA degree...so she is not only limited to Animation, and also so that she does have the traditional Gen Ed classes in her curriculum so that she can at least get a job to put food on the table if not hired for Animation right away. It is crazy how the cost of school is so high, yet the entry level positions pay about $20. DD figured out the math on that one PDQ! I think DMAC is also VERY highly rated, in Boca Raton...it is a 3 year program tho, year round, but possibly not quite as aggressive as Full Sail's. Pretty decent job placement, instructors are form co's like Sega, Sony etc. Also Ringling in Tampa..but again, pretty expensive, but I think more of a campus/traditional stting. Also Miami University of Int'l Art and Design...just afew others to look into.
Also SCAD in Savannah Ga...their President used to work for WDW...Very competitive program there.

Pam

ETA: As I understand it for Full Sail, atudents must first aquire an AA degree thru Full Sail first to the tune of $40,0000 and then can go ahead into their BA degree...at an additional $64,000. I am REALLY hoping that I am misunderstanding the info, but on the back of the application that DD rec'd, it specifically staes this. YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!

They are having an open house at full sail on March 12. Would like to get the dates of the April open house as we will be there from the 12-24. My son will probably take the tour then.

My son graduated from Full Sail in August. His major was Recording Arts. It's a very intense program....sometimes he would have labs from 1-5 AM....it simulates the way things are in the industry. He's a little older, in his 20's...some of the younger kids didn't make it. I'm glad he waited awhile before going.

My big concern after that expense, was whether he'd find a job when he finished. He got a position as a production assistant for Holland America cruise line. They were building a new ship in Italy and he was flown over there in January then sailed back across the Atlantic when the ship was finished. He will now be working the sound board in the theatre for one of their Alaska cruises this summer. He's young, single and seeing the world. Many of the people he met were also Full Sail graduates. They have a very good reputation in the field.

I called and got the dates for the next several open houses. They are:

April 9
May 7
June 11
July 16
August 13
September 10

We are going on May 7! :)

Oh, and thanks for the insights, ANiceNurse! It's always good to hear a personal experience. My son will only be 18 when he goes, so that does concern me somewhat.

Hello,
I plan on attending Full Sail sometime soon for Show Production and Touring and also Entertainment Business.
I have read thousands of forums on this school and have heard a lot of bad things about it but also have seen many good things. One thing is you have to be very dedicated. Plan on spending a lot of time after class studying and asking questions. The more you get to know your teachers and classmates the better because you will have connections through them. In this type of business connections are everything. This school cost a lot so don’t get a job while you attend. I know that kind of makes no sense, but use every moment you have learning what you can while your there. You really have no time for a job if you want to succeed in this school.
Another thing is, you have to love what your doing. I have ran sound and lighting for over 200 concerts in the Florida area, not including every Wednesday night at my church for the past 4 years, so I already have a heads up in the industry and have a lot of experience and I love every minute of it. I plan on going to Full Sail to expand my knowledge on sound and hopefully join a company that does tours for some of my favorite Christian artist and I plan on having NO help from Full Sail with their job placement program because I have seen nothing good come out of it. Don’t believe their percentage on the grads Full Sail places in the field. It’s not accurate at all. Most people who find a job out of Full Sail do it on their own through many many phone calls and connections made with others in the industry. So like I said connections are everything.
Don’t plan on making a lot of money in these industries. The biggest reason for me doing this is for my ministry. It’s possible to hit the big time but it is very hard especially in Show Production and Touring.
Going to this school could be a nightmare or it could be the best thing that ever happened to you. What you put into it is what you’ll get out of it.
God Bless and good luck
